Child driver services: how much do mothers drive?

Children's chauffeur by numbers

Our data showed that moms spend more than 176 minutes a week driving their kids, which equates to 153 hours a year. The average mum makes nine trips a week for a total of £19.18 on petrol, which rises to nearly £1,000 over the course of a year.

Repayment mom

While many mothers agree to the additional costs associated with transporting their children, one in XNUMX mothers charges their children for all the trips they make for them. The same number agree to take their children with a chauffeur in exchange for the fact that they will do additional work around the house.

Mom, taxi driver

When it comes to who drives the most in the family, over two-thirds of moms (68%) say they are the number one driver. Interestingly, this figure varies considerably across the UK, with Liverpool, Wolverhampton and Worcester having the highest proportions of mom drivers.

Highest and lowest share of moms driving

At the other end of the scale, Southampton and Oxford have the lowest share of mum drivers, with dad or other family members sharing the load. In York, Wrexham and Aberdeen, the ratio between moms and other drivers is close to 50/50.

Reasons why moms take their kids

Looking at where moms take their kids back and forth, it's no surprise that school is the top answer. Two-thirds also say they drive them shopping, which is the second most likely reason they drive their kids. Visiting friends and relatives and taking them to or from after-school clubs were also among the top ten reasons.

How to get the most out of your driving time

Whatever the reason, in general moms really appreciate the time spent in the car with their kids. Over a third say driving with kids is a family experience (35%) and 34% love to sing along to the radio with their kids. In addition, 21% say that the most open and honest conversations they have are in the car, and 13% of mothers admit that driving children is their favorite part of the day.

All figures, unless otherwise noted, are from market research conducted by Research Without Barriers. The total sample size was 2,002 UK moms who can drive. The study was conducted from February 21, 2020 to February 24, 2020.
