The easiest, but far from the smartest way to dispose of used engine oil. If used oil is often drained down the drain, the oil will form deposits on the pipes in the form of a fatty emulsion, which will eventually lead to clogging. Draining oil on the ground provokes serious environmental pollution with oil products and toxic additives contained in the oil. In addition, administrative liability in the form of a fine is provided for such acts (Article 8.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation). So, such a method of disposal is not only harmful to the environment, but can also result in monetary losses in the form of a fine, which is quite fair.
Use used oil as fuel
This method of waste disposal is the most widely used today. Along with the increase in electricity tariffs and rising prices for all types of fuel, the owners of capital garages face the question of heating in the winter. There are many designs of furnaces and boilers operating on used motor oil. This method is especially relevant for owners of service stations of a small area. In this case, the issue of space heating is solved along with the disposal of fuel and lubricants, which significantly reduces material costs and increases the return on business.
For private owners of garages and workshops, this method of heating a room is also one of the least expensive, since a significant amount of used oil usually accumulates during self-maintenance of cars and other motor vehicles. Thus, this method of disposal is one of the most promising if you need to heat the room in winter.
It is only necessary to observe the fire safety rules: do not place heaters near containers with flammable and flammable liquids, as well as near combustible materials, and use only serviceable and correctly assembled heaters for burning liquid fuels.
Use as anti-corrosion and lubricants
This topic is no less extensive than the use of used oil as fuel. It is limited only by your imagination and ingenuity. First, used motor oil is still a free lubricant that many use to lubricate various mechanisms (bicycle parts, chainsaw chains, etc.), as well as locks and swivel joints. Due to the presence of lubricant in the padlock, moisture does not accumulate and it becomes much easier to open it during the frost period.
Many people use used oil as a wood impregnation when installing fence posts, impregnating the lower crowns in log houses. Old engine oil is also used to lubricate molds when pouring concrete structures, making bricks, blocks, paving slabs and other concrete products. There is also an old way of anti-corrosion treatment of the bottom, sills, and other hard-to-reach places in a car by lubricating or pouring a composition based on used engine oil.
Where can I take oil for recycling?
Today, there are several types of disposal of used motor oil. If you hand over the oil yourself, then in this case you will have to pay a fee, since, alas, the disposal of fuel and lubricants waste is paid. In addition, there may not be such organizations in your locality, or they may work exclusively with organizations with large volumes of waste.
In many cities there are points for the collection and processing of fuel and lubricants. Some lubricant dealers also offer to collect and recycle used engine oil for money. Everything is quite simple: you bring used fuel and lubricants yourself or a representative of the organization leaves for you, pays you money and takes the used oil. Usually their clients are large and small repair shops, service stations, transport companies, organizations that sell cars, special equipment, agricultural machines, etc. Also, the technology of processing used oil into diesel fuel is gaining popularity every year.
A number of strict requirements are imposed on organizations that collect and dispose of used engine oil. This type of activity is subject to licensing. Despite all the requirements, collection and disposal remains a fairly profitable business, since the price of used oil is much lower than the price of the end products of its processing.
