Increasing engine power - what methods are available?

You can increase the power of the engine in various ways. As you know, manufacturers put certain restrictions into the engine so that cars comply with environmental standards in a particular country. In addition, the software installed in the electronic control unit does not allow the engine to work at full strength - a later ignition timing is set, as a result, the fuel does not burn as efficiently as it could.

To increase engine power, you can use several methods: make significant or minor changes to the cylinder block, fuel system and exhaust system, reprogram the control unit, succumb to advertising and install various “gadgets” that, according to their inventors, not only help save up to 35 percent of fuel, but also have a positive effect on engine power and efficiency.

The very first thing that comes to mind is, of course, chip tuning - flashing the control unit.

It is worth noting that chip tuning is also done when installing LPG, since slightly different parameters and engine operation modes are needed for gas combustion.

The essence of chip tuning is that specialists read the main engine control program and make certain adjustments to it, or completely install new software with already changed calibrations. It is clear that for each model there are strictly measured values ​​\uXNUMXb\uXNUMXbthat are responsible for the ignition timing, the supply of the required amount of oxygen, and so on.

Chip tuning brings tangible results:

• improved acceleration dynamics;
• an increase in engine power by 5-25 percent and torque by 7-12 percent;

After chip tuning, the motor needs some time to get used to the new settings. During this short “burn-in” period, fuel consumption may increase, but then it will bounce back and even decrease, as the vehicle’s resources are used more efficiently. If you entrust chip tuning to people who are poorly versed in this, then instead of increasing power, you will get continuous problems, and the ECU can be thrown away. In addition, not all models can be chip-tuned.

Making changes to the engine

Increasing power by making changes to a car's engine can require a large investment. You need to contact only specialists who know all the intricacies of the work and are ready to give a guarantee.

One of the ways is called installing a larger air filter, such filters are used in sports cars. In order for the air supply system to work properly, it will be necessary to increase the diameter of the intake manifold pipes, as well as install an intercooler. On sale there are intake manifolds with smoother inner walls and shortened pipes.

To facilitate the release of exhaust gases, an exhaust manifold with an increased diameter of the pipes will be needed.

Changing the geometry of the silencer pipes also affects the increase in power, for example, two silencers are a common thing for cars with high power, you can also install exhaust gas filters with zero resistance, a silencer with a large exhaust pipe diameter, a “forward flow” system (it is prohibited by environmental standards in most countries).

Another fairly common technique is turbine installation. Using a turbine, you can achieve more efficient fuel combustion, but, again, you will need to install additional equipment and make changes to the ECU programs. An important advantage of turbocharged engines is that less combustion products - soot, soot - settle on the cylinder walls, since the exhaust gases are reused for combustion. Accordingly, there are fewer harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

Increase power and increase in engine volume. To do this, bore the cylinders and install pistons of a larger diameter, or install a crankshaft with a large stroke.
