What is the point of Stellantis, the brand created by PSA and Fiat Chrysler?

On December 18, 2019, PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler signed a merger agreement to create Stellantis, a much larger company with a name that few people know the meaning of.

Following a merger agreement in 2019, Fiat Chrysler and Grupo Peugeot SA (PSA) decided to name their new combined company. By July 15, 2020, the name "Stellantis" was already being used to refer to the new brand in automotive-related headlines. According to those involved, the name comes from the Latin verb stello, whose closest meaning is "illuminate the stars". With this name, both companies wanted to honor the historical past of each of the constituent brands and at the same time refer to the stars to present a vision of the scale they will have as a group. Thus, this important alliance was baptized, which will lead several brands to a new era characterized by sustainable mobility solutions for the environment.

This name is for corporate purposes only, as the brands within it will continue to operate individually without changing their philosophy or image. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) consists of several well-known car brands: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Fiat Professional, Jeep, Lancia, Ram and Maserati. It also owns Mopar for parts and services, and Comau and Teksid for components and manufacturing systems. For its part, Peugeot SA brings together Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel and Vauxhall.

As a group, Stellantis has been operating since the first quarter of this year and has already reported a significant increase in revenue, which increased by 14%, while the demand for cars grew by 11%. The company wants to offer customers a rich choice backed by a strong corporate and financial structure that draws on the experience of its brands. Founded as a large conglomerate of brands, it diversifies its targets into major markets such as Europe, North America and Latin America with an eye to other parts of the world. Once their partnership is well established, it will take its place as one of the leading Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), paving the way for great mobility-related technologies, while its member brands meet the demands of a new world that calls for freedom from CO2 emissions.
