A large stone on the road is not uncommon both in the city and on the highway. It can cause a lot of problems: from a forced slalom on the road, to a major accident with human casualties. Let's start simple. The natural reaction of every driver to the unexpected appearance of an obstacle ahead is emergency braking. Sometimes it really saves, but more often it causes an accident. Other road users who ride behind do not always have time to react to such actions. And no matter what modern auto-braking systems are in their cars, they will not be able to save them from a collision.

We also note that in such cases you should not count on electronics at all. All such assistants are "sharpened" for the definition of large objects - trucks, cars, motorcycles. There are also pedestrian recognition systems that will even react to a medium-sized dog. But the stone is much smaller. Yes, and laser radars and cameras of the "hitchhiking" systems are upstairs, under the windshield. So they are powerless in the described situation and will have to act on their own.

You can sometimes go around a stone only by driving into the oncoming lane. This may end up in a "boom". A sharp steering maneuver made within its own direction of movement will also not pass without a trace. After all, other drivers may not see the stone and overtake just at the time of the start of the emergency maneuver. Here's an accident that could end in a ditch for one of the cars.

Passing a stone between the wheels is sometimes safer than other maneuvers. For example, if your car has a ground clearance of more than 200 mm, the stone will simply pass under the bottom and not hit the belly.

But it will come out much cheaper than repairing the motor.

The situation is much more dangerous when the car has low ground clearance, but there is no protection. Then choose the lesser of the evils. In order to save the engine crankcase, we sacrifice, for example, the suspension arm. To do this, we skip the stone not clearly in the middle, but aim to the side. A bent lever and a split bumper can be replaced, but with a broken crankcase, the car will not go far.
