In the Netherlands, e-bike sales outnumbered conventional bicycles

In 2018, e-bike sales surpassed regular bike sales in the Netherlands for the first time.

The electric bike is definitely popular in the Netherlands. The Pedelec segment, which grew 40% last year over 2017, surpassed traditional bike sales for the first time. In 2018, electric bicycles accounted for 40% of the mixed market. In contrast, sales of “simple” bicycles fell 8 points compared to 2017, accounting for only 34% of total sales. The remaining 26% is split between ATV and scooter sales.

Pedelecs, much more expensive than their non-electric counterparts, have helped increase market turnover.

Of the 1,2 billion euros received in 2018, more than 820 million, or two-thirds, came from the sale of electric bicycles. In Holland, the average purchase price increased by 18% from € 1020 to € 1207.
