Warta: In 2024, we will begin production of 21700 cells that can be charged in 6 minutes. It turns out 10 C!

The German Varta is a well-known brand of XNUMX V batteries and a manufacturer of disposable and rechargeable lithium cells, so the company's meager presence on the electric car market must be surprising. It was most clearly noticed by the management of Varta, which has just announced a revolution in the cell market. Production already in the XNUMX year.

Varta wants to produce specific XNUMX cells

As reported by WirtschaftsWoche, the German manufacturer wants to start the production of XNUMX cells (XNUMX cm in diameter, XNUMX cm high) in XNUMX - the same as used in the Tesla Model XNUMX and Y. They are intended for automotive companies, but Varta does not want to compete with "pure energy cells", which today are provided by South Korean LG Energy Solution and Chinese CATL. Varta's cells are to conquer the world with the possibility of recharging in XNUMX minutes.

The company's CEO Herbert Schein talks about "charging to full", but even when it comes to topping up in a "reasonable" range like XNUMX-> XNUMX percent, we would be dealing with a breakthrough. The best cells charged with the highest power used in cars need about XNUMX-XNUMX minutes - and already in this situation we pump energy into them with the power of about XNUMX C (battery capacity times XNUMX, e.g. at XNUMX kWh it would be XNUMX kW).

Going down to the level of XNUMX minutes is the equivalent of XNUMX C. The aforementioned battery with a capacity of XNUMX kWh could therefore take shots with a power of XNUMX MW (!).

Varta believes that thanks to such cells it could conquer the electric car market, but she quickly states that it does not want direct competition with existing products, "Purely energy cells". The German company prefers specialized solutions and segments with higher margins. He sees his cells in a set with range-extenders or fuel cells, especially in trucks, as well as in premium and sports cars. He even talks about e-boosters, batteries (for hybrids?), Which would allow for efficient acceleration without high fuel consumption (source).

A pilot production line in Ellwangen (Germany) is to be ready by the end of this year. Mass production is to start in XNUMX, then XNUMX-XNUMX million cells should leave the factory.
