Yes, shaft length matters. There are forks of different lengths; the one you choose should be determined by your frame and the task you're doing.
If you choose only one fork, try to find a balance between these two factors.
Shaft length
The standard shaft length is 700 mm (28 inches). Depending on blade size, this is usually suitable for people 1.65m (5ft 5in) to 1.73m (5ft 8in). For those taller, look for lengths from 800mm (32 inches). Some shafts are up to 1.4 mm (54 inches) plus, for example, a fork.
For smaller frames, look for a 660mm (26") shaft or less. The curb fork is ideal due to its narrower and lighter shape. Alternatively, a telescopic fork has an adjustable shaft, typically ranging from 660 mm (26 in) to 800 mm (32 in) plus.
Choose the length of the shaft to suit your height
When you stand on the end of the fork - the tip of the tines - the top of the fork handle should reach the bottom of your chest. This will avoid constant stoop when working with a shovel.

Similarly, a short person digging with a long fork may find it more difficult to apply enough force to the handle. A longer shaft will also make it harder to lift the fork. In this regard, look for a fork with a curved shaft, i.e. ergonomic fork. The flex of the shaft makes the top work in a more horizontal position, which means the user doesn't have to lean as low, reducing stress on the back.
