Torque Vectorization / Torque Vectorization: Operation

This is a chassis-related feature that we hear more and more about. Indeed, Torque Vector Control was introduced in 2006 and was first used on Mitsubishi racing cars (I'm talking about a vector differential here ... see second paragraph). The principle is that the wheels turn at different speeds when cornering in order to achieve stability, but above all mobility (preference is given to turning the car). However, it is necessary to distinguish between two main systems that complement each other, let's start with the first.

Vector brake effect

It is the most commonly used because it is the cheapest to integrate. Therefore, it is now used in very standard cars and therefore this technology is spreading at a great rate.

It is about playing on the brakes to be able to turn around corners in the same way that a sled is driven. As you descend such a trail (a message for those who understand sledding), you then use the left or right brakes to maneuver and turn.

It's the same here, although obviously the main authors are still the steering wheel and steering ... Here we again emphasize the car's rotation by braking the inner wheels when cornering (even when we are not braking), which is controlled by the computer that controls the ABS / ESP. So you can think of it as an active ESP that works even when there is no loss of traction. Therefore, we can assume that he is active, and not just passive.

Therefore, the device uses the brake pads in a silly and simple way ... And when we understand how the differential works, we also know that braking one wheel involves transferring more power to the other (which, therefore, is ideal here if the chassis receives engine torque.). Because an open differential (that is, the most classic differential) transfers most of the torque to the wheel that experiences the least resistance (which sometimes implies the use of so-called limited slip versions to avoid this effect. Parasite).

Note that this method of operation will wear out the pads faster and will be less effective under load on the engine (accelerating in a corner). There is a much more interesting device for this, which we will now see.

Torque vector control with dedicated differential

In addition to using the braking system in 2006, we had the idea to develop a differential that would be able to change the gear ratio for each chassis on one axle. Simply put, it is a matter of the ability to change the gear ratio at the rear axle level. Basically, it is as if there was a mini gearbox between the axle and the wheels (with only one report) that can be turned on or not (that is, one per train, left and right). Note in passing that this is a planetary train, which therefore has a gear train design identical to the BVA.

In addition, this system is installed on vehicles that have at least a rear engine axle (which therefore receives torque) and which usually have a longitudinal engine. The Audi TT Quattro (which is actually just a Golf) is limited to a system that uses brakes. There doesn't seem to be room to graft a vector torque differential to its little Haldex in the back. On the other hand, the A5 is not a problem, nor is the Series 4 (in short, any propulsion unit that therefore has a box that points to the rear axle).

Principle above and “real life” below, a photograph I took in Frankfurt with OEMs supplying their technology to manufacturers. To understand better, know that you need to rotate 90 degrees to the left so that it is in the same direction as in the diagram (in the image below, the wheels are up and down, not left and right). Right)

Torque Vectorization / Torque Vectorization: Operation

So it starts when you accelerate on the curve to get top speed, in short, you get out of the curve as quickly as possible. The system was quickly adopted by Audi, which has a few "bogies" that turn too little: the MLB platform (the engine is too advanced ...) and the Quattro (which contributes a bit to understeer). Thus, Torque Vectoring was the hairstyle for the ring brand, which thus largely corrected the understeer of its S and RS using the MLB platform (and therefore also Porsche, which uses it extensively: Macan and Cayenne).

In short, to get back to the system, if I want to avoid understeer by accelerating like a piglet, then I have to have a rear wheel outside the corner that turns faster. For this, we will force him to submit a report thanks to a multi-disc device, controlled "electrohydraulically" (or simply electrically). As a result, the outer rear wheel, which turns faster, allows me to spin well even when I accelerate strongly (instead of going straight).

Above is my schematic diagram, and below is the reality of Audi, Porsche, Lambo, Bentley, etc. You will notice that it differs from the first version shown above, but the principle remains the same.

Torque Vectorization / Torque Vectorization: Operation

Therefore, we have an electrical system that activates the hydraulic valve lifters that block the multi-plate clutch discs. This will trigger a report by locking the internal planetary gears in the case of the Audi / VW sports differential, which can be found everywhere from the S5 to the Urus.

Great, thanks for this tutorial. Is it really necessary for driving at a speed of 80 and soon 60 km / h on secondary roads and 120 at best on highways.

I wish it were 1950, before the spread of the blues and their iron machine.

It's a little easy and simple to criticize, but fixed speed cameras are not made by gendarmes or the police, nor is their drastic reduction in numbers ... They are the first to be subjected to these measures, which in fact do not. kiff in the area. every day away from there, and you stand a lot of vanity on the road. Believe me, we rarely hold a competition for judicial police officers to deal with the traffic police in the snow to find the extra km / h ...

So come and join the high tide to do a night patrol from 2 to 7 a.m., or listen to a girl getting raped, or take a 12-hour beating in a row to wander through the mud under the navy to find your missing grandfather due to Alzheimer's. and continue at 10 am, after 3 hours of sleep, through the evacuation of prisoners, which will last until 21 pm, at the cost of poverty and the real French population, always dissatisfied with everything ... Are you talking about the proliferation of police ?! Seriously, in 15 years the workforce will melt like snow in the sun !! I have over 30 years of license and when I was 20 I saw a lot more law enforcement on the roads than today !!

and I clarify that I do not work either in the police or in the gendarmerie ...

In the US or Canada, these people are heroes. In France, their backs are constantly breaking wood.

I completely agree with you, and thank you for these pleasant words.

@ Unknown: For my part, I do not deny the protection the police can give me. I just regret seeing her handle me 100% of the time and fine me for often useless claims. Once, when I needed them (my brother's motorcycle, which we found together with people), they cowardly let us down (we all have other jokes ...). Ahead of us were the thieves riding motorcycles, 2 hours after the police were still out, and the thieves who took the trunk (they had plenty of time after they drove in front of us for over an hour and a half.) ... C since then I have lost all respect for the police and gendarmerie, because if the roads filled with workers are doing better than ever, the cities and thugs live well. And this is a real shame, in contrast to the fact that before we could go faster (Nanard).

Automotive files or the art of variable geometry, where some try to be irrelevant for some articles, but the editorial board allows himself the same without problems.

Thank you for this very informative article.

On the other hand, it is sad that for the system created by Mitsubishi, there are only illustrations of German brands ... while brands such as Honda, Lexus or others could also be mentioned, suggesting that this device is only present on German cars. ... which is not true ... so, in my opinion, we could remain a generalist.
