Hungarian light tank 43.M "Toldi" III

Hungarian light tank 43.M "Toldi" IIIAt the end of 1942, the Ganz company proposed a new version of the Toldi tank with frontal armor of the hull and turret increased to 20 mm. The gun mask and the driver's cabin were protected by 35 mm armor. The broadened stern of the turret made it possible to increase the ammunition load of the gun to 87 rounds. The order was issued, but it was decided to concentrate the efforts of the industry on the production of the Turan tank. There is evidence that only three tanks were built in 1943, which received the designation 43.M “Toldi” III k.hk, replaced in 1944 by Toldi” k.hk.C.40. It is possible that 1944 more of these machines were manufactured in 9, but it is not clear whether they were fully completed.

Tanks Toldi ”II, IIa, and III became part of the 1st and 2nd TD and 1st KD, restored or newly created in 1943. The 1st KD had 25 Toldi IIa. In July 1943, the newly formed 1st assault gun battalion received 10 Toldi IIa. When the 2nd TD left the fierce battles in Galicia in August 1944, 14 Toldi remained in it. The 1st KD, sent in 1944 to Poland, lost all their Toldi there.” There is evidence that on June 6, 1944, the Hungarian army had 66 Toldi with a 20-mm cannon and 63 with a 40-mm gun. The use of the remaining "Toldi" in the battles on the territory of Hungary in the autumn of 1944 was not marked by any outstanding events. The 2nd TD, surrounded in Budapest, had 16 Toldi. They all died, only a few vehicles took part in the final operations of 1945.

Hungarian light tank 43.M "Toldi" III

Modifications of the tank "Toldi":

  • 38.M Toldi I - basic modification, 80 units produced
  • 38.M Toldi II - modification with reinforced armor, 110 units produced
  • 38.M Toldi IIA - re-armed with 40 mm gun 42.M Toldi II, converted 80 units
  • 43.M Toldi III - modification with a 40-mm cannon and additionally reinforced armor, no more than 12 units were produced
  • 40.M "Nimrod" - ZSU. A track roller was added (the tank became 0,66 m longer), a 40 mm Bofors automatic anti-aircraft gun was installed, which was located in a circular rotation turret with 13 mm armor open from above. At first it was supposed to make a tank destroyer, but in the end it turned out to be one of the most successful ZSUs of World War II to support armored units from air attacks. ZSU weight - 9,5 tons, speeds up to 35 km / h, crew - 6 people. A total of 46 units were built.

Hungarian light tank 43.M "Toldi" III

Hungarian light tank 43.M "Toldi" IIIFrom the history of the name of the tank "Toldi". This name was given to the Hungarian tank in honor of the famous warrior Toldi Miklós, a man of high stature and great physical strength. Toldi Miklos (1320-22 November 1390) is the prototype of a character in Peter Iloshvai's story, Janos Aran's trilogy and Benedek Jelek's novel. Miklós, a young man of noble origin, gifted with remarkable physical strength, works shoulder to shoulder with farm laborers on the family estate. But, having quarreled with his brother Dördem, he decides to leave his home, dreaming of the life of a knight. He becomes a real folk hero of the time of King Louis. In 1903, Janos Fadrus created a sculptural composition - Toldi with wolves.
