VW ID.3 owners receive the first OTA update (over-the-air). • ELECTRIC CARS

Volkswagen ID.3 buyers brag about getting the first online update (OTA). It seems so far this is only documentation, no changes in the behavior of the machine are visible, and the version of the installed software does not change either.

First real OTA update on Volkswagen

Although Volkswagen has announced from the beginning that new software versions can be downloaded into the VW ID.3, the journey has been long and arduous. In 2020, photos of the cars of the first series circulated around the world, in which updates were downloaded manually, in parts, by “connecting to a computer”. Over time, it turned out that every electrician released before the end of 2020 would have to visit the service in order to receive firmware that can be updated - this became possible with version 2.1 (0792).

Volkswagen ID.3 buyers have just received their first real online update. The version number does not change, you do not see any bug fixes, only the updated online documentation and the module to download it are displayed. The update is downloaded over the cellular network, no Wi-Fi required. The update does not appear in any other Volkswagen models on the MEB platform, nor in the VW ID.4, nor in the Skoda Enyaq iV.

Taking into account the amount of fixes (= documentation), it can be assumed that we are dealing with a system test. Probably, the manufacturer checks the operation of mechanisms on not very important elements of the software in order to download more serious patches via OTA in the future. According to its president, Volkswagen has announced that it wants to publish new software versions every 12 weeks.

Editor's note www.elektrowoz.pl: although a car patch with a lot of software bugs stuck to VW ID.3, it is worth mentioning that the latest firmware 2.1 (0792) is receiving positive reviews. We used this version on a Volkswagen ID.4 we drove in early May. We had no problems with the software, although a month earlier Skoda Enyaq iV greeted us with empty meters.
