Drivers and cyclists. What is the Dutch Coverage Method?

Drivers and cyclists. What is the Dutch Coverage Method? As soon as the snow left the streets and the temperature rose well above zero, the cyclists returned to the streets. This means that car drivers need to remind themselves that the cyclist is an equal road user.

Trainers from the Renault Driving School recommend the Dutch Reach method. This is a special technique for opening a car door. The Dutch Reach method is to open the car door with the hand further away from the door, i.e. the driver's right hand and the passenger's left hand. In this case, the driver is forced to turn his body to the door, which gives him the opportunity to look over his shoulder and make sure that there is no approaching cyclist. This method minimizes the risk of running into a cyclist by pushing them off their bike or, in extreme cases, pushing them into the street under a moving vehicle. That is why it was introduced in the Netherlands as part of road safety education in schools and as part of the driving test*.
