The equipment was mass-produced until 1989, supplied for the needs of the USSR army. Part of the tractors was sent to the missile forces of the Strategic Missile Forces, where they were used to deliver ballistic missiles to launch silos. There are several types of tractors, machines differ in carrying capacity and additional equipment. Design
The tractor design is based on a frame made of stamped and welded elements. The parts are joined together by rivets and spot welding. The side part consists of stringers and Z-sections made of sheet steel. Front and rear there are towing devices equipped with spring shock absorbers.
The military MAZ is equipped with a 525-horsepower 12-cylinder D-12A diesel engine with a liquid cooling system. The engine is equipped with 2 rows of cylinders mounted at an angle of 60°. A similar engine was used in the Hurricane ATVs. A design feature is the use of 2 intake and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder. The drive of the gas distribution mechanism mounted on the heads of the blocks is carried out by shafts and gears.
The fuel supply is carried out in 2 tanks with a capacity of 420 liters each. A plunger pump is used to supply fuel to the cylinders. The unit is equipped with a special safety device that shuts off the fuel supply when the pressure in the oil system drops. The exhaust manifolds have a cooling jacket, which contributes to the accelerated heating of the engine.
To simplify starting the engine in winter, an autonomous heater with an electric pump is installed, which ensures the circulation of liquid through the cooling system.
A 1-stage torque converter is connected to the engine, capable of operating in fluid coupling mode. To block the wheels of the unit, a mechanism with an electric drive is installed. In addition, there is a lifting gear, which is activated when the car is moving without a load. Torque from the transformer is fed to a 3-speed planetary gearbox equipped with an additional reverse speed.
The distribution of torque between the axles is carried out by a transfer case with reduced and direct gears. Gear shifting is carried out by a pneumatic drive; the design of the gearbox has a lockable center differential. The drive shafts are equipped with a conical main pair and a planetary gear. In through gearboxes, additional pairs of gears are installed to drive the center differentials. Cardan gears are used to connect all gearboxes.
The front wheel suspension uses individual levers and torsion bars. Elastic shafts are located longitudinally, 2 such parts are installed on each front wheel. Additionally, hydraulic shock absorbers of bidirectional action are installed. For the rear wheels of the bogie, a balancing suspension is used, devoid of leaf springs. Brake system of drum type with pneumohydraulic drive.
To accommodate the driver and accompanying personnel, a closed metal cabin is installed, designed for 4 people. There is an inspection hatch in the roof, which is also used for ventilation. For heating, an autonomous unit is used. The steering mechanism is equipped with a hydraulic booster with a separate supply tank. Inside the cab is a removable hood providing access to the front of the engine. Semi-automatically lockable, double-jointed saddle mounted on the rear wheels of the bogie.
