Volkswagen Caddy 2.0 TDI (110 kW) Trendline

We are not fooled by being forced to sit in the living room, as this means that we will go on vacation and have fun. We will also not hide the fact that we would prefer to avoid commercial vehicles, as this means that you have to work and work hard. So we were quite happy with the family version.

The Volkswagen Caddy is mostly still working, as it comes with quite a few specs. A huge trunk with enough room to the ceiling for a small tent, a rigid rear axle with leaf springs, additional storage space above the driver’s head, sliding side doors and a shorter first gear show that its main task is still to help craftsmen in their work. Only then can it be a family car that has received a few sweets in the form of assistance systems, but is not a completely new product of the automotive industry, since it has the same external dimensions as its predecessor and access to the fuel tank. with just a key. We don't remember the last time we saw this in a test car.

The test had the label of generation 17, that is, the fourth generation, which is only a series that will take care of the first buyers. In the case of the test car, the accessories are 1.477-inch red-rimmed wheels with a lot of notices (not only bad ones, make no mistake!), LED headlights and a rear-view camera. Although the Caddy had the latest Volkswagen Group information system with a Slovenian menu that we praised several times, we heated or cooled ourselves using the manual air conditioner. With winter fast approaching, we were pleased with the optional heated windshield and optional heated front seats, so we didn't have much trouble with dew or heating the interior too slowly. It's important to know that there's plenty of room in the Caddy - especially above the passengers' heads, which also has a useful storage box for small items, in our case a first aid kit and a punctured tire repair kit. . The Caddy has a huge trunk, partly due to the higher roof and partly due to the rigid chassis with leaf springs. The otherwise unpopular solution in passenger cars has a number of advantages, since it takes up little space (and therefore does not steal it from the trunk!), and, above all, allows a fairly large load capacity. According to the data in the license, the weight of the test Caddy is 2.255 kilograms, and the maximum allowed weight of the vehicle is XNUMX kilograms. When driving moderately on beautiful roads, you won't feel the difference due to a different rear chassis, only faster driving or riding on a bad road shows some disadvantages in terms of poor response or after a home jump. If the Caddy is fully loaded, of course, this feature miraculously disappears. The children complained about the difficult opening of the trunk lid upwards and the inability to open the rear side windows. Otherwise, they were quite happy with the roominess, especially the cool rear seat access provided by the side doors on each side of the car.

Interestingly, the Caddy also had active cruise control, which, together with the Front Assist and Driver Alert system, ensured the safety of the driver or passengers. Although the test model had a sportier steering wheel, a red-painted dash top and a touchscreen, it still couldn't hide its craft mission. Neither the 150-horsepower turbodiesel nor the six-speed transmission, which provides a top speed of almost 200 kilometers per hour, helped. First gear is all about towing a trailer and a full trunk in favor of a shorter one, and the engine is top of the range anyway, so you might think lack of power and torque was never an issue. Consumption wasn't great, as we used almost a liter more fuel on a standard lap than the 1,6-litre TDI test Touran and averaged 6,8 liters in the test.

While the Caddy is perfect for family needs, it also handles daytime crafts with ease. Therefore, we did not resent some of its shortcomings too much, because a worker without dirty hands is not a real worker, is it?

Overall rating (315/420)

  • For a courier who can also take care of family needs, a bad B is a pretty good score. Although it has quite a few drawbacks, a large trunk and sliding side doors require an active weekend. In fact, this is a car that provides reliable transportation more than comfort and driving pleasure. Masters will appreciate it, but families too?

  • Exterior (11/15)

There is no beauty here, but it is pleasant enough not to park it at the end of the street.

  • Interior (91/140)

The interior shows that it is primarily designed to carry loads (larger trunk, poorer materials, more modest comfort), but you won't be hurt by that.

  • Engine, transmission (50

    / 40)

The engine is really sharp, the drivetrain has the right gear ratios (six gears!), And the comfort is still acceptable for family pressure.

  • Driving performance (54

    / 95)

The position on the road is also average due to winter tires, good health at full braking, slightly worse steering stability.

  • Performance (29/35)

The engine was the test car's trump card: there was enough torque and power for full load, top speed just below the magic limit of 200 km / h.

  • Security (34/45)

Four stars in Euro NCAP, active cruise control, driver warning, Front Assist, etc.

  • Economy (46/50)

Consumption is not at an all-time low as is price, but there is less loss in value when selling used.
