Volkswagen e-Golf (2020) with a lower actual range than the model (2019). What happened?

Intriguing changes to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website. While the Volkswagen e-Golf (2019) offered a range of 201 kilometers, the earlier model (2020) had a range of just 198 kilometers. On the other hand, the car has increased energy consumption.

When the year changes, the manufacturer did not report any improvements to the battery - it still has a total capacity of 35,8 kWh, although the car has fallen slightly in price.

In spite of this latest electronic golf according to EPA covers only 198 kilometers on a single charge and consumes 18,6 kWh / 100 km (186 Wh / km) in mixed mode. The older one offered 201 km with a power consumption of 17,4 kWh / 100 km (174 Wh / km).

CarsDirect, which first noticed this change, deliberately pointed out that the only modification for the last model year is the Driver Assistant package, which is part of the standard equipment (source).

Volkswagen spokesman Mark Gillies says the change is not about the brand, but the procedure followed by the EPA. However, neither CarsDirect nor we have found another model that will perform worse when changing the year to (2020) with the same battery drive parameters.

We have recently seen such a decline with the electric Smart ED. Unofficially, it was said that Daimler had applied some optimization procedures and that they had finally been verified by the Environmental Protection Agency. Since then, the Smart EQ (2019) – an ED model with a different designation – has been noted for delivering a range of just 93 kilometers on a single charge.

Out of curiosity, we can add that the new VW e-Up (2020) - the e-Golf's little brother - has the same battery module numbers as the e-Golf. An older version of the e-Up with a smaller battery had completely different modules of its own. Thus, some unification may have occurred in which the usable battery capacity or energy efficiency suffered. But it could also be a false engagement...
