Volkswagen Golf Plus 1.6 TDI DPF (66 kW) Trendline

In the previous generation, I wrote that Golf Plus is Nadgolf, you can also say Supergolf. I still find the Positive more useful than its classic sibling due to its longitudinally adjustable rear bench and high height, but it's also uglier. However, it is in this bush that the rabbit probably sells the Plus for much less than the classic Golf.

The last representative of the people's car for fathers and even more so for families is no different from its predecessor in this sense. It's still taller, you still won't be able to tell it apart from a regular Golf at first glance, and you'll still be faced with the dilemma of choosing the Plus, the Golf Variant, or even the Touran.

The three models compete for the same customers, although Volkswagen claims the Touran offers more functionality and less comfort, while the Golf Variant (still in its old form until October) has the same functionality but less comfort. I don't know if I agree with this, but we definitely welcome if we can even choose from several models that are adorned with similar technology from the same car manufacturer.

In terms of design, the use of LEDs in the taillights, the installation of turn signals in the rearview mirror and the attachment of the wipers to the lower outer edges of the windshield seems to be a real revolution, as the Volkswagen Golf remains traditional - regardless of body shape.

Similar story inside. With clear gauges, great air vents, and too few A/C control buttons, the instrument panel is mostly richly equipped and even feels like the lower Golf until your head and hands are in the trunk or around the rear seat. The rear bench moves longitudinally by 160 millimeters.

The seat can be moved in a ratio of 40: 60, and the backrest can be adjusted even in a ratio of 40: 20: 40 due to the central backrest. Liters, and in extreme cases you can even count on 395 liters.

Although we drove the spare wheel under the boot (be careful, it's an accessory!), The boot was not level when the rear bench was folded down. This is also the home's only drawback for luggage, as the boot is well crafted and equipped with fasteners to which we can attach the retractable grocery.

The driving position was excellent thanks to the good seats (even with generous side bolsters!) And the three-spoke steering wheel (again optional), aside from the long clutch pedal movement that becomes constant. in the Volkswagen Group.

Although we tested the base version of Trendline, which is more of a desert than an oasis, we were pleasantly surprised by the base package. Each Golf Plus is equipped with four airbags and two airbags, ESP, daytime running lights, air conditioning and radio. All we lacked were parking sensors (surcharge € 542), cruise control (€ 213) and, say, hands-free communication via Bluetooth (€ 483, to which we need to add € 612 for the multifunction steering wheel). But even without these gadgets, the trip was very pleasant, even so far comfortable. ...

Along with the new bodywork, we also tested for the first time a 1-litre TDI turbodiesel, licensed at 6 kilowatts or 66 horsepower. When describing an engine that boasts the latest common rail technology (i.e. a single-pillar pump-injector system is already a waste of history), a stock diesel particulate filter, and meets EU90 environmental standards, we must highlight two chapters: starting and driving on the highway or highway.

While for a "smooth" ride, we can easily say that despite the five-speed manual transmission, it is smooth and no less enjoyable than, say, the XNUMX-liter TDI, since there is no ghost or rumor of excessive noise or vibration , we have to start or "crawl" at low revs, which is more important.

The engine is clinically dead below 1.500 rpm, since the modest volume of a diesel engine cannot go one and a half revolutions, as an unloaded car with a driver would show on the scales. This is why you will be driving almost one gear lower in the city than, for example, with a two-liter turbodiesel. Or you will wait for the engine to wake up at 1.500 rpm like after your first coffee, and above 2.000 rpm you already credit it with a sip of Red Bull.

This continues until you come across a slope, a start and, preferably, a fully loaded car. If we say that before we started climbing the hill with the handbrake, we also had our hands and a confused look, you might be clear that you will be working very hard on it. So it is better to avoid high hills and full loads, if you do not want those who were waiting behind you to look at you ugly.

Trailer? Forget it. You will also forget the last time you went to the gas station. Our average test was around 6 liters, which is a great result considering we mostly drove around town. The most ideal gear mapping and Michelin Energy Saver tires also help to cope with moderate thirst, which reduces fuel consumption with less rolling resistance, but does not contribute to well-being in busier corners. Together with a softer chassis, they prefer a soft, if not calm driver.

Is golf not enough for you, and you are afraid of bigger cars? The Positive Golf will suit you – even with the 1.6 TDI engine. Don't expect miracles from humble turbodiesel technology, although you can easily fool someone while driving that there's more volume under the hood. Just a little patience to wake up the engine and overtake.

Face to face. ...

Dusan Lukic: HM. ... Theory: This engine-powered Golf is for undemanding (not to mention senior) buyers looking for space, a taller ride, and diesel economy. But given the engine rpm at the lowest rpm, which requires vigorous accelerator pedal engagement and a lot of shifting, the theory collapses. For the modest, a basic gasoline engine is better suited. This diesel will suit the maximum of those who want to save at any cost (on consumption).

Overall rating (330/420)

  • The engine loses a few points due to low power, and you will lose a pinch of nerves due to a dead end below 1.500 rpm. You enjoy refueling and traveling on bass, and patience is a must on winding roads. The family will be happy if you are interested.

  • Exterior (10/15)

Similar to the Golf, but less attractive due to its greater height.

  • Interior (105/140)

Some dissatisfaction with the ergonomics remained, so there is more space inside and more options in the trunk.

  • Engine, transmission (49

    / 40)

Good drivetrain (albeit with only 5 gears) and satisfactory engine if you ignore the first 1.500 rpm. You won't be disappointed with the chassis and steering wheel.

  • Driving performance (56

    / 95)

As the chassis is focused on comfort, the braking and steering stability is slightly inferior to that of the classic Golf.

  • Performance (19/35)

First and second gears sweat a lot, decent top speed and jittery flexibility.

  • Security (56/45)

Excessive blind spots in bad weather, some protection can be purchased and some not at all.

  • Economy

The price may be slightly higher, but you will get a tested and well-equipped vehicle. Thanks to its low fuel consumption and long range, you will soon spoil.
