Volkswagen and strategy for the coming years: 6 gigabyte cells, 240 GWh by the end of the decade, V2H in MEB from 2022

Volkswagen is planning significant investments in lithium-ion cell factories and by the end of the decade it wants to have 6 factories with a production capacity of 240 GWh cells. The manufacturer also says that cars on the MEB platform will appear on the market from 2022, which will allow the use of cars as energy storage devices.

Volkswagen Group announced that it will increase the processing capacity of the Swedish plant Northvolt Ett to 40 GWh of batteries per year. The Salzgitter plant (Northvolt Zwei, Germany) will be modernized in the same way. By the end of the decade, a total of six Gigaz plants with a production capacity of 40 GWh cells each are to be built in Europe (source).

Unification of cell architecture, rejection of modules and synergy [when purchasing raw materials] battery costs are expected to decrease by 50 percent in cheaper vehicles and 30 percent in the mainstream segment.... The manufacturer did not provide absolute numbers, but if other leaks are to be believed, that would mean a drop to around $ 50-70 per kWh of battery. Or, in other words: if the battery now accounts for 1-30 percent of the cost of a car, then by halving these values, an electrician can be 40-15 percent cheaper.

Planned optimization of cell production costs. It is worth noting that the plans are very similar to the strategy presented by Tesla during Battery Day (c) Volkswagen.

в recycling this is to return to circulation 95 percent of raw materials used to make cells. According to Volkswagen representatives, this is “everything except the separator”. Quick charge he should let you reach the level 80 percent battery in 10 minutes... Cell prototypes under development reach 80 percent in 12 minutes.

The group also announces collaboration between British BP, Spain's Iberdrola and Italy's Enel. fivefold expansion of the network of fast charging stations by 2025... Ultimately, all companies must make available to customers 18 charging points, including 8 with a capacity of 150 kW, launched jointly with BP. The partners are no coincidence, Spain and Italy are just picking up steam with electrification, and BP has a network of filling stations across Europe, including in key markets such as the UK and Germany.

From 2022, the concern's models built on the MEB platform will be able to function as energy storage devices.that can be used to supply the household (V2H, V2L). It's not clear if cars will handle V2G comprehensively, but Volkswagen is known to dream of managing wasted wind energy - Germany alone could produce 6,5 TWh more energy a year if there was room to store it.
