The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is cheaper than the 2022 Honda Civic.

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta has a distinct advantage over the 2022 Honda Civic in that the base Jetta is cheaper than the Civic and offers pretty much the same features. However, in the older version, the Jetta becomes more expensive than the 2022 Civic.

Volkswagen found out when, and it's that the new Civic lowers the price of the Volkswagen Jetta, but the Jetta might be a better car. Then, of course, you should consider faster models like the Civic Si and the Jetta GLI. The best may determine who becomes the new king of compact cars in the controversial compact segment of the United States.

How much does the new 2022 Volkswagen Jetta cost?

The new base model Jetta is $1,900 cheaper than the Honda Civic. VW's newest compact sedan starts at $20,195. Apparently, the new car also has a modernized look just like the Honda Civic. That's all well and good, but what's under the Jetta?

As always, Volkswagen's heavy-duty EA888 turbocharged four-cylinder engine appears in all trim levels of the Volkswagen Jetta, from the base model to the hot GLI. Even on base models, it's clear that the Jetta is targeting the Civic with an identical 158bhp. The technical specifications of the base Civic and Jetta models are virtually identical in every way.

The base models of the Volkswagen Jetta are made of denim.

Frankly, this makes the base Jetta, given the "S" designation as the latest model, a big deal. For around $20,000 you get a pretty powerful little machine. Like the Civic, automatic models will give you a little more mileage. However, unlike the Honda, you get the excellent Direct Shift Gearbox dual-clutch transmission. It's much better than the Civic's torque converter unit and remains in the lineup until the GLI.

However, there is a manual model. Honestly, this is best reserved for the GLI. The Volkswagen Jetta S and its Sport, SE and SEL trim levels are the best match for the car. However, if you want traveler-friendly safety features like adaptive cruise and lane keeping, you'll need an extra $995.

Jetta GLI wants to surpass Civic Si

But in the top-end Volkswagen Jetta GLI, things get really interesting. In combination with, consumers will face a real dilemma. Both develop about 200 hp. and have a manual transmission, but the Jetta costs a bit more, losing that advantage. But that's a story for another time. Regardless of the trim level of your Jetta, you're sure to get a great deal.
