Volkswagen Jetta 2022: German sedan is updated with a change of image and new technologies

The Volkswagen Jetta and Jetta GLI are getting a current-generation update, and it includes big changes for the 2022 model. The new engine gives the sedan more power, as well as new colors and improved assistance systems.

In 1979, Volkswagen released a compact sedan Jetta. More than four decades later, the Jetta is still selling well for the German brand, and it's coming a little fresh for 2022.

A small change that fits the 2022 Jetta very well.

The Jetta and Jetta GLI aren't exactly new this year, although they do come with updated tech and stylish designs that are welcome. This generation was released during the 2019 model year, so it has a bit of life left before being retired for the next one.

Let's start with Jetta engine. Its 1.4-horsepower 147-liter engine has been replaced with a 1.5-horsepower 158-liter that it shares with the new one. . Wolfsburg engineers figured out how to implement a modified version of the Miller cycle to help with fuel economy, which the EPA estimated was already 33 mpg combined.

The sportier side of the GLIThe 2.0-liter turbocharged engine develops a respectable 228 hp. Manual shifters should also note that both the Jetta and Jetta GLI come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, though an automatic transmission is of course optional.

Four versions to choose from in the 2022 VW Jetta

The Jetta will have four models by 2022, with the GLI essentially being a fully loaded model. In the Jetta, a sport trim replaces the R-Line trim level, leaving it with S, Sport, SEL y SEL Premium. The new sports version comes standard with darkened grille, closed mirrors and window trim, black headlining and cloth sports seats.; from there, it becomes smoother with color-matched outer components and, yes, leather.

Front Assist, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Assist are now standard on the Jetta, while VW IQ.DRIVE safety package it's not obligatory. This adds lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and emergency assistance that calls for help in the event of an accident. This package is standard for the downloaded GLI.

external changes

From a cosmetic standpoint, both the Jetta and the GLI have received minor changes. The first one has new grille with two chrome strips framing the VW logo, and the second is new black honeycomb diffuser and wider exhaust pipes. Inside, an eight-inch digital display is standard on the Jetta, while the GLI is a couple of notches larger at 10 inches.

If you're a color lover, you'll be happy to know Jetta has three new schemes for 2022: kings red metallic, Oryx White metallic y ascending metallic blue. The GLI, meanwhile, will just carry over its five colors from 2021, which seems a bit unfair.

Searching for the new Jetta and Jetta GLI will be available at US dealerships in the fourth quarter of 2021.
