Volkswagen opens a lithium-ion cell plant in Salzgitter. The Gigafactory will be launched in 2023/24.

In Salzgitter, Lower Saxony, Germany, part of the Volkswagen plant was put into operation, which will produce lithium-ion cells in the future. It currently has a department called Center of Excellence (CoE), but construction will begin in 2020 on a plant producing 16 GWh of cells per year.

Three hundred scientists and engineers will work in the current CE to test innovative methods for the production of lithium-ion cells. In other words: their goal is to get to know the process and design an optimal factory, not to interfere with the production process of lithium-ion cells - at least that's what we understand in this message (source).

The total investment should amount to 1 billion euros, that is, approximately 4,4 billion zlotys, the money will be spent by Volkswagen and a partner of the Swedish company Northvolt. From 2020, a plant will be built in Salzgitter that will produce 16 GWh of cells per year (read: gigafactory). Production is due to start in 2023/2024.

Ultimately, the Volkswagen Group will create a division with cell and battery know-how, including cell, electronics, battery systems, motors, charging and cell recycling systems. It should be noted that the planned 16 GWh of cells is enough to produce almost 260 3 Volkswagen ID.1 58st with XNUMX kWh batteries.
