Volkswagen recalls more than 200,000 European Golf models due to vehicle software flaws

The Volkswagen Golf is one of the brand's most iconic cars in the world, but it's not without flaws. VW recalls 220,000 Golf Mk vehicles in Europe due to a software configuration error that resulted in multiple vehicle failures

Volkswagen will close 2021 with an exit from . All Golfs produced in Europe between 2019 and 2021 are being recalled due to faulty software. This is the same problem that caused Volkswagen to recall 56,000 8 Golfs in January of this year. And it's the same problem that plagued the Golf's launch this year.

The Golf 8 was declared the most popular car in Germany. In 312,000, 2020 units were sold in Europe, and from December 220,000 to November 2019, units were sold in Germany alone.

What is a software glitch?

But throughout its production, it has seen owners of software gremlins. The problem is that the car keys are not recognized, the assistance systems do not respond correctly or malfunction, emergency braking is initiated without an emergency flasher, the app and the car show different mileage, traffic sign recognition detects signs that they are not there, and the entertainment system sometimes completely quits. building.

Golf 8's tarnished reputation could affect residual value

In addition to inconvenience and unacceptable rejections, landlords are concerned about the residual value of the lease. If the Golf 8 is considered undesirable because of the negative press, not to mention the software itself, prices are bound to drop. With that in mind, VW wants to fix them all.

The January review concerned only the most notorious criminals. VW says navigation and voice control should work better with this new update. But when browsing the forums, there are many other annoying problems.

The big problem seems to be that the Golf 8 confuses speed limit signs: sometimes miles per hour and sometimes kilometers per hour. Affects passing vehicles when the Golf slows down to overtake slower surrounding vehicles.

UCI incorrectly reads speed and signals

There are also times when you don't know which side of the road you should be on. This affects the lighting setting "Drive Mode". They can change the interpretation of driving from left to right. In essence, these are all software bugs that the new code should fix.

Meanwhile, what is happening in the United States?

With these shortcomings on the other side of the continent, the question arises: will Golf 8 owners be offered the same upgrades as in Europe? . And it was assumed that deliveries will begin in the summer.

We expect these software updates to be built into US models already. So unless there are other issues that haven't surfaced yet, if Volkswagen says it's fixed, then you'll have to take their word for it.
