Volkswagen Passat 1.8 TSI (118 kW) Highline R-Line

The Passat is known for being an interesting yet low-key sedan that fits perfectly into Volkswagen's ironclad repertoire of conservative offerings. The Scirocco, (in part) the Eos and, last but not least, the new Passat CC prove that the Germans can play on emotions.

Along with the four-door coupe, the Passat sedan looks fuzzy, but Leshnik's sedan has enough power to get out of the shadows and show off its charisma. It just needs a little extra and people will look for the limousine as if it were a CC.

The test car was fitted with all sorts of accessories that upgraded the Highline's already very rich (and some of the most expensive) equipment and led some to even believe they were seeing a CC rather than a classic Passat. What the R-Line can do, as VW claims, is an accessory that leaves a strong mark both inside and out!

Changing the look of cars is an area where opinions clearly differ. The Passat R-Line update, which includes bumper extensions, side skirts, a new grille, eye-catching 18-inch wheels and discreet fenders on the trunk lid, among other things, would hardly be called an exaggeration. On the contrary, designers deserve congratulations for a healthy measure of taste. However, not everything is in the exterior, which is perfectly complemented by tinted windows and white color, which further emphasizes the design details.

The R-line also features a reduced sports chassis by about 15 millimeters, further enhancing the Passat's sporty appearance. We were pleasantly surprised by the chassis as, despite the more noticeable stiffness, it still provides a comfortable ride and represents a very good compromise between sportiness and comfort. In line with the sporty update, the 1-liter TSI engine is also introduced.

We wouldn't extol a supercharged engine with sports cars in mind, but we could easily subscribe to the claim that this part of the Passat is also a good compromise between (relative) efficiency and dynamics. With a six-speed manual gearbox, they are a very good pair, the transmission is precise, the engine runs smoothly when driving quietly, and when cornering at higher speeds (TSI spins without looking back), it shows perfectly exemplary performance and adds a sporty sound.

At idle, you need to listen well to the engine, if it works at all, it is so quiet, quieter than the wind even at highway speeds, when in sixth gear at 130 kilometers per hour the tachometer shows about 2.700 rpm. Then you can change three more gears down (!), Add 10 km / h, and the meter will not be red yet, starting from 6.500 / min.

Confirmed by factory data (maximum power 118 kW at 5.000 rpm and 250 Nm from 1.500 to 4.200 rpm) and measurements (acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 9, 9 s) and sensations followed by praise for starting the engine, which works great already at idle speed and behaves exemplary in terms of responsiveness. Your best bet is, of course, to turn up the higher revs, ignore the gear lever and only confirm during the corners that Volkswagen has managed to find a really good compromise between a pleasant and everyday car with this package.

The 1.8 TSI engine follows the 1-liter sibling in fuel consumption: if you drive it, the on-board computer will show you a high average thirst (more than 4 liters at 12 km / h), and when driving slowly, this amount will be below eight liters. However, such a Passat already has a price that turns the neck on. Especially those who will not like its interior, which in the R-Lin only received metal imitation, aluminum pedals and something more upmarket equipment such as a "stripped down" multifunction steering wheel underneath.

Most of the plastic parts remain in the memory that the Passat is no longer a fresh product and that the competition is already ahead. We praise the seats (leather and Alcantara in the right places) - the front end is also adjustable in the lumbar region, they move by electricity, and when cornering, the body is supported by good side supports. On the sidelines, the rider knew that he had already replaced quite a few riders. In the test Passat, the comfort (and price) of the rich Highlin was also increased by the Business (parking sensors inside) and Exclusive packages (alarm, bi-xenon headlights, unlock and lock, keyless start ...).

evaluation

  • Passat R-Line, yes or no? Except for the price at which the Škoda Octavia RS (200 "horses") is already parked in your garage as a family "racing car", and the finances remain for a third of Fox (Fox), we see no hesitation. The perfect combination of comfort, sportiness and everyday use on the same four wheels. Just think of DSG.
