Volkswagen is ready to present to the world its updated van, which has become an icon in the market. The new VW ID Buzz will arrive on March 9 to reveal its production version, which will have up to 369 horsepower.
Nearly 20 years after Volkswagen dropped the Eurovan from its American lineup, VW's iconic van shape is back. On March 9, VW will unveil the production version of its electric pickup, as confirmed by company CEO Herbert Diess on Twitter.
VW ID Buzz with 369 HP
The ID Buzz is known to be built with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, with the latter reportedly churning out up to 369 horsepower. Batteries with capacities up to 111 kilowatt-hours will provide an expected range of over 300 miles, powering ID Buzz with a variety of body styles, from commercial pickup trucks to the ID Buzz California verified camper. Sales are expected to begin in 2023.
Contemporary design that retains its roots
The final design of the ID Buzz has already been more or less revealed by VW, which in November shared images of a lightly camouflaged example similar to the Fruit Stripe Gum promo car. This was not the slab front shape most associated with the classic Type 2 bus, but a more modern shape with a rounded nose and a sloping minivan-like windshield. It's a compromised shape for aerodynamic and crash safety requirements, but it can be argued that the spirit of the VW bus has always been more important than form, so it fits in that sense.
VW ID Buzz out of competition
VW will have virtually no competition in the electric van segment, with the possible exception of Canoo, an electric vehicle startup that promises to release a van-like electric vehicle this year for $34,750. It's probably cheaper than the ID Buzz will ever be, although Canoo needs to figure out how to handle production first before worrying about competing with one of the most iconic VWs of all time.
