Volkswagen will build a battery plant in Germany for 1 billion euros, it needs 300+ GWh of cells per year!

The Supervisory Board of Volkswagen approved the allocation of almost 1 billion euros (equivalent to 4,3 billion zlotys) for the construction of a plant for the production of lithium-ion cells. The stations will be built in Salzgitter, Germany, and the concern estimates that in Europe and Asia they will need only 300 GWh of cells per year.

By the end of 2028, Volkswagen plans to bring 70 new models of electric vehicles to the market and sell 22 million vehicles. It's a ten-year plan, but a bold one, as the company currently sells fewer than 11 million combustion vehicles worldwide today.

The concern is probably very unhappy with the progress made in the cell factories. The Group's management estimates that soon all Volkswagen brands will need 150 GWh of batteries for cars in Europe and double that for the Chinese market. This gives a total of 300 GWh of lithium-ion cells per year excluding US market! It's worth comparing that number to Panasonic's current capabilities: The company is producing 23 GWh of cells for Tesla, but vows to hit 35 GWh this year.

Therefore, the supervisory board and management decided to spend almost 1 billion euros on the construction of a plant for the production of lithium-ion batteries in Salzgitter, Germany. The plant should be ready in the next few years (source). The plant will be built in cooperation with Northvolt and will be operational in 2022.
