Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI UN 4Motion Highline

We have already written a lot about the new Tiguan in our magazine. But as Volkswagen undertook a major overhaul, so did a thorough presentation of the new car. First, there was a static presentation, then classic test drives, and now the car finally drove along Slovenian roads. We have always been enthusiastic about the new Tiguan, and even now, after long trials on Slovenian roads, it is not much different.

The new Tiguan has grown in length to be roomy inside and not too big on the outside. Thus, he is still an agile and at the same time sovereign traveller. Following in the footsteps of recent models, the Tiguan has also received sharp and cropped touches, making it more attractive and masculine. When we place a new one next to the previous one, the difference is obvious not only in terms of design, but also the impression of the car is completely different. The impression, however, is also convincing in this class. Namely, it is clear that crossbreed sales growth has been rising sharply for several years, as a result of which there are more and more competitors in this class. Which, however, are different, namely in terms of drive, since some of them are only available with a two-wheeler, while others are correct when all four wheels overcome the slope and mud. Many customers are convinced by the design, workmanship and, above all, by the equipment, more than just a drive.

In principle, crossovers are used by older people or those drivers who want comfortable getting in and out of the car, but there are more and more people who are moving out of the premium class. These are drivers who have had premium crossovers and now, since they only drive in pairs, they buy a few smaller cars. And of course, it is difficult to satisfy such customers, because they used to drive cars that easily cost more than 100 thousand euros. But if you manage to make a good car, equipped with many assisted safety systems and not costing more than 50 thousand euros, the job will be more than perfect. The test Tiguan can be classified in a similar class. The fact is that the car is not cheap, not with a base price, and even more so with a final one. But if you imagine a buyer who paid a little more for a slightly larger car a few years ago, it becomes clear that such a car can also be beneficial to someone. Especially if the customer receives a lot. The test car was additionally equipped with, among other things, an electrically retractable towbar, an additional luggage floor, a navigation device and a virtual display with navigation maps from all over Europe, a panoramic sunroof, LED Plus headlights and a parking assist system. parking system including a rear view camera. Add to that standard Highline equipment, which includes 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic high beam assist, fully foldable passenger backrest, leather upholstery and comfortable front seats, optional tinted rear windows, cruise control with automatic control. A control system with an emergency braking function in the city and last but not least, gear levers behind the steering wheel for sequential shifting, it is clear that this Tiguan is more than well equipped.

But the equipment does not help much if the foundation is poor. At the same time, the Tiguan offers significantly more space than its predecessor. Not only in the cabin, but also in the trunk. That's 50 liters more, apart from the folding rear seat backrest, the passenger seat backrest can also be fully folded down, which means the Tiguan can carry very long items. In general, the sensations inside are good, but still there is a bitter aftertaste that the interior does not reach the exterior. The exterior is completely new and beautiful, and the interior is somewhat in keeping with the style of what has already been seen. Of course, this does not mean that she lacks something, especially since she impresses with ergonomics and convenience, but surely there will be someone who will say that she has already seen it. It's the same with the engine. The 150-horsepower TDi is already known, but it's hard to blame it for performance. It is difficult to rank it among the quietest in the automotive industry, but it is powerful and relatively economical. The redesigned all-wheel drive, engine and seven-speed DSG gearbox work well together.

Sometimes it jumps uncomfortably at startup, but overall it works above average. The driver operates 4Motion Active Control with a rotary knob, which allows the drive to be quickly adjusted for driving on snow or slippery surfaces, for driving on normal roads and difficult terrain. In addition, the damping can be adjusted using the DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) system. You can also select Eco mode, which activates the swim function every time you release the throttle, which greatly contributes to lower fuel consumption. Thus, 100 liters of diesel fuel was enough for 5,1 kilometers of our standard circle, while the average consumption in the test was about seven liters. That being said, of course, it must be said that the new Tiuguan allows for a relatively fast ride. There is a slight tilt of the body in corners, but it is true that when driving over bumps and potholes, the solid chassis suffers. However, this issue can be elegantly solved with the already mentioned DCC system, so that driving on Slovenian roads is no longer (too) tiring. The test Tiguan is also pleased with the driver assistance systems. Along with many already known, the long-awaited novelty is the parking assistant, which, of course, stands guard while parking. If the driver accidentally overlooks something while maneuvering, the car will automatically stop. But this also happens if we want to deliberately "run over" a large herb. Sudden braking surprises the driver, let alone the passengers.

After all, sudden braking is better than a scratch on the car, right? The LED headlights are commendable, and even more so for the help with high beam control. Switching between high and low beams is quick and, above all, assistance in certain situations only darkens the space that will dazzle the oncoming driver, everything else remains illuminated. It also makes night driving less tiring. Even more commendable about the good performance of the lighting system, of course, is the fact that not even oncoming drivers complain about it. In conclusion, we can safely write that the new Tiguan is impressive. But it should be borne in mind that this is especially true of the circle of users who like this type of car. Fans of limousines or sports cars, for example, won't feel good in the Tiguan, nor will it convince them to drive. However, if the choice is limited to crossovers, the Tiguan is (again) at the top.

Overall rating (365/420)

  • Not because it is a Volkswagen, but mainly because it is the youngest in its class, the Tiguan easily takes first place. True, this is not cheap.

  • Exterior (14/15)

Build one of the best Volkswagen vehicles in recent memory.

  • Interior (116/140)

The interior of the Tiguan is less redesigned than its exterior, but it also offers a virtual display instead of classic instruments.

  • Engine, transmission (57

  • Security (39/45)

    If not looking, see Tiguan.

  • Economy (44/50)

With moderate driving, the consumption is very good, but with dynamic driving it is still above average.
