Volkswagen Touareg: evolution, main models, specifications

Initially, the Volkswagen Touareg was created for traveling in difficult road conditions. For fifteen years of its existence, the model has been continuously improved, its technical characteristics have improved. The popularity of the Tuareg has increased many times over the years.

General characteristics of the Volkswagen Touareg

For the first time Volkswagen Touareg (VT) was presented on September 26, 2002 at the Paris Motor Show. He borrowed his name from the African nomadic Tuareg tribe, thereby hinting at his off-road qualities and craving for travel.

Initially, the VT was created for family travel and became the largest passenger car in the history of the Volkswagen Group. The smallest dimensions were the models of the first generation. Their length was 4754 mm and height - 1726 mm. By 2010, the length of the VT has increased by 41mm and the height by 6mm. Body width during this time has grown from 1928 mm (2002–2006 models) to 1940 mm (2010). The mass of the car during this period decreased. If in 2002 the heaviest version with a 5 TDI engine weighed 2602 kg, then by 2010 the second generation model had a mass of 2315 kg.

As the model developed, the number of trim levels available to buyers increased. The first generation had only 9 versions, and by 2014 their number had increased to 23.

Trouble-free operation of the VT in off-road conditions is determined by the possibility of locking differentials, a reduction transfer case and an electronic gearbox. Due to the air suspension, which, if necessary, can be raised by 30 cm, the car can overcome curbs, climbs of 45 degrees, deep potholes and ford up to one and a half meters. At the same time, this suspension ensures a smooth ride.

Salon VT, decorated respectably and expensively, fully corresponds to the executive class. Leather seats and steering wheel, heated pedals and other attributes testify to the status of the car owner. In the cabin, the seats are arranged in two rows. Due to this, the trunk volume is 555 liters, and with the rear seats folded down - 1570 liters.

The price of VT starts from 3 million rubles. In the maximum configuration, the car costs 3 thousand rubles.

Evolution of the Volkswagen Touareg (2002–2016)

VT became the first SUV in the Volkswagen model line after a long break. Its predecessor can hardly be called the Volkswagen Iltis, which was produced until 1988 and, like the VT, had good cross-country ability.

Over the past 15 years, Volkswagen Touareg has gained great popularity among Russian motorists.

Volkswagen Touareg was developed by the engineers of the three largest German automakers. Subsequently, the Audi Q71 and Porsche Cayenne were born on the same platform (PL7).

Volkswagen Touareg I (2002–2006)

In the first version of VT, produced in 2002-2006. before restyling, the characteristic features of the new family were already clearly visible: an elongated, slightly flattened body on top, large taillights and impressive dimensions. The interior, trimmed with expensive materials, emphasized the high status of the car owner.

With off-road performance and comfort in harmony, the first VT quickly gained popularity.

The standard equipment of the pre-styling VT I included 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, auto-heated mirrors, adjustable steering wheel and seats, air conditioning and an audio system. More expensive versions added wood trim and dual-zone climate control. The maximum engine power was 450 hp. With. The suspension could work in two modes ("comfort" or "sport"), adjusting to any road terrain.

Versions of the VT I differed markedly in their technical characteristics.

Before restyling, almost all modifications of the VT I had dimensions of 4754 x 1928 x 1726 mm. The exception was the sports versions with 5.0 TDI and 6.0 engines, in which the ground clearance was reduced by 23 mm.

Volkswagen Touareg: evolution, main models, specifications
In 2002, the Touareg became the largest passenger car ever built by Volkswagen.

The mass of the car, depending on the configuration and engine power, varied from 2194 to 2602 kg.

VT-I engine

Petrol injection engines of the first versions of VT I were V6 units (3.2 l and 220–241 hp) and V8 (4.2 l and 306 hp). Two years later, the power of the 6-liter V3.6 engine was increased to 276 hp. With. In addition, over the five years of production of the first generation model, three turbodiesel options were produced: a five-cylinder engine with a volume of 2,5 liters, a V6 3.0 with a capacity of 174 liters. With. and V10 with 350 hp. With.

Volkswagen made a real breakthrough in the sports SUV market in 2005, releasing the VT I with a W12 gasoline engine with a capacity of 450 hp. With. Up to 100 km / h, this car accelerated in less than 6 seconds.

Interior VT I

Salon VT I looked relatively modest. The speedometer and tachometer were large circles with clear symbols that were visible in any light. The long armrest could be used by both the driver and the passenger in the front seat at the same time.

2018 Volkswagen Touareg

The official presentation of the new VT was supposed to take place at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the fall of 2017. However, it did not happen. According to one version, the reason for this was a decrease in the capacity of Asian sales markets. The next auto show was held in Beijing in the spring of 2018. It was there that the concern introduced the new Touareg.

Engine choice: petrol or diesel

On the domestic market, VT models with gasoline and diesel engines are presented. Buyers are faced with the problem of choice. It is impossible to give unambiguous advice in this case. Most of the VT family is available with diesel engines. The main advantage of a diesel engine is lower fuel consumption. The disadvantages of such engines are the following:

The advantages of gasoline engines boil down to the following points:

The disadvantages of engines running on gasoline include:

Owner reviews Volkswagen Touareg

Comfortable, fast, excellent road holding with proper management. If I changed now, I would take the same one.

Two weeks ago I bought a Tuareg R-line, in general I liked the car, but for the kind of money that it costs, they could put on good music, otherwise the button accordion is a button accordion, in a word; and there is no Shumkov at all, that is, very bad. I will do both.

A solid car, high quality workmanship, it is time to change some body parts, and abandon many.

A car for two, it’s uncomfortable to sit in the back, you can’t rest on a long journey, there are no beds, the seats don’t fold, they recline like in a Zhiguli. Very weak suspension, curbing and aluminum levers bend, the air filter on a diesel engine explodes at 30, sucks service, both in the regions and in Moscow. From the positive: it holds the track well, the all-wheel drive algorithm (anti-slip, pseudo-blocking (an order of magnitude better than Toyota). I sold it after two years and crossed myself ....

Thus, the Volkswagen Touareg is one of the most popular family SUVs today. Cars are produced at the factories of Bratislava (Slovakia) and Kaluga (Russia). In the future, Volkswagen plans to sell most of its SUVs in Asian countries, including Russia.
