Volkswagen Touran 1.4 TSI Traveler

On the first three points, the Touran performs well, especially since there are no additional seats in the trunk, which are otherwise completely useless for transporting passengers and, therefore, reduce the volume of the trunk. Since the rear seats are separate, you can move them forward and backward at will, adjust the backrest tilt, fold or remove them. Even when fully pushed back (so there is plenty of knee room), the trunk is more than big enough for more or less everyday needs, and at the same time, it sits perfectly in the back.

Because the seats are high enough, front and side visibility is also good, which will be especially appreciated by young children who are otherwise doomed to look at the door and seat in front of them. The front passenger will not complain either, and the driver will be less pleased, mainly due to the too flat steering wheel, which makes it very difficult to find a comfortable driving position. And there are no audio controls on it, which is a significant disadvantage of ergonomics.

Road gear also included special items on the seats, which on hot days were not spacious enough. A great sound system with a built-in CD server is much more impressive - constantly searching for stations or changing CDs can be a very inconvenient thing on long trips. And since air conditioning (Climatic) is also included as standard on this equipment, the condition in the column under the scorching sun will not be as annoying as in a hot and stuffy car.

The TSI marking, of course, stands for Volkswagen's new 1-litre four-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine, equipped with both a mechanical charger and a turbocharger. The first works at low and medium speeds, the second - at medium and high. The end result: no turbo vents, an extremely quiet engine and a joy to rev. Technically, the engine is almost the same as the Golf GT (we covered it in detail in Issue 4 this year), except it has about 13 fewer horses. It's a pity that there are even a few fewer of them - then I would get into the insurance class up to 30 kilowatts, which would be financially more profitable for the owners.

Otherwise, the technical differences between the two engines are small: the two rear mufflers, the throttle and the damper that separates the air between the turbine and the compressor - and, of course, the engine electronics - are different. In short: if you need a powerful 170 "horsepower" Touran (in the Golf Plus you can get both engines, and in the Touran only the weaker), it will cost you about 150 thousand (assuming, of course, that you find in your computer tuner loaded with 170 hp program). Actually quite affordable.

Why do you need more power? At high highway speeds, the Touran's large frontal area comes to the fore, and it's often necessary to downshift when a grade kicks in to speed. With 170 “horses” there would be fewer such cases, and when accelerating at such speeds, the pedal would need to be pressed less stubbornly to the ground. And consumption is likely to be lower too. The Touran TSI was extremely thirsty as it consumed just under 11 liters per 100 kilometers. The Golf GT, for example, had two liters less thirst, partly due to the smaller frontal area, but largely due to the more powerful engine, which had to be less loaded.

But still: the Touran with the same powerful diesel engine is half a million more expensive, much noisier and less inclined towards nature. And here TSI smoothly wins the duel over the diesel.

evaluation

  • The Touran remains a great car for those looking for a spacious (but not classic single seater) family car. The TSI under the hood is a great choice - too bad it doesn't have a few less horses - or a lot more.
