Volkswagen Touran 1.6 FSI Trendline

Petrol motorization, especially in the lower end of the range, has become even more dubious since the introduction of Euro4 exhaust standards; power and torque are usually sufficient on paper, but the practice is more brutal. Cars seem to be underpowered when the accelerator pedal is depressed and when the engine reacts.

With such thoughts, I got into the Touran, despite the modern engine technology - direct injection of gasoline into the combustion chambers of the cylinders. What will it be? Is the 1.6 FSI just a grinder that manages a significant body in some way? Will it disappoint? On the contrary, will he impress?

The practice is somewhere in between, and it is important that the fear does not materialize. While driving, of course, it is impossible to determine how and how gasoline enters the cylinder, it is only clear that the engine is gasoline. Immediately after turning the key, cold or warm, it flows calmly and quietly.

It remains quiet throughout the rev range, up to 6700 rpm, when the electronics gently and imperceptibly interrupt the ignition, and the noise naturally increases and (over 4500 rpm there) acquires a slightly sportier engine color. After what the engine shows, in the Polo it can really be sporty, but in the Touran it has a different job and a different mission. First of all, it resists more mass and poorer aerodynamics than the Polo.

An empty Touran weighs almost a ton and a half, and this is also the reason why it is difficult for the engine to accelerate to high revs. The six-speed gearbox is designed to make better use of the torque curve, not sportiness. The first gear is relatively short, and the last two gears are quite long, which is quite common in cars of this type (limousine van).

Thus, such a Touran is designed for moderate driving, but that does not mean that it drove slowly. The engine feels best in the mid-rev range when it has built up enough torque and power to drive this seven-seater, and the way the engine works is most obvious here. With direct injection, technicians (can) achieve performance in the poor fuel mixture area, which directly translates into lower fuel consumption.

As long as you drive such a motorized Touran with one third of the gas in fifth or sixth gear, the consumption will also be less than nine liters per hundred kilometers. It also means that all the benefits of FSI technology are lost when driving in the city or behind the wheel - and consumption can rise to 14 liters per 100 km. So, you need to be able to save money.

The Touran also pleases with well-known facts: spaciousness, workmanship, materials, three (second row) individually removable seats, two (flat) seats in the third row, lots of really useful boxes, lots of places for cans, good grip, efficient (in in this case, semi-automatic) air conditioning, large and easily readable sensors, very good ergonomics of the entire space, and much more.

It's not (clean) perfect, but very close. Despite the good adjustability, the handlebars are still quite tall, the windows fog up quickly in wet weather after starting (fortunately, they grow quickly too), and the handlebars are plastic. But none of this affects the well-being in him.

The only major complaint is something that cannot be measured with this technique: the Touran in particular has an overly simple, rational design that lacks charm. Big golf does not cause emotions. But maybe he doesn't even want to.
