Volkswagen Touran 1.9 TDI Trendline

And how is it that Volkswagen first intimidated the Opel Flex7 system and is now very confidently entering the market with the Touran, which basically offers "only" five seats? The answer may be 60 percent of buyers of this type of car looking for usability and flexibility, 33 percent of buyers are looking for spaciousness first, and the remaining few percent expect pleasing shape, accessibility, ease of use, comfort and, of course, seven seats. ...

Based on these findings, Volkswagen decided to develop a small sedan van that primarily relies on an extremely flexible and comfortable and, of course, large interior.

Practical and spacious inside

And when you spend the first few minutes of your time with the Touran looking around the interior, you will find that the engineers have done their job thoroughly and thoughtfully. For example, in the second row of seats, the last three are independent and completely separated from each other. You can move each of them longitudinally (160 centimeters movement), you can also fold the backrest (or adjust its tilt), fold it completely down to the front seats, or, equally important, remove it completely from the cab. in a separate section of this test, in the custom corner).

The final challenge, removing the seats from the cabin, would otherwise require slightly stronger people as each seat weighs a relatively large 15kg (outer seat) or 9kg (middle seat), but you'll be rewarded for your efforts. The Touran has a large trunk that can get quite large if the seats are removed. It basically offers up to 15 liters of luggage space, while that figure rises to 7 liters when all three seats in the second row are removed.

However, since the Volkswagen engineers were “not only” completely satisfied with a very spacious and well-adjustable trunk, they added a spacious interior to it. Thus, in it we find a whole heap of storage space for small items of all kinds, half of which would be used only for listing them. So let's just note that there are as many as 24 open, closed, open or closed drawers, pockets, shelves and similar spaces for small items throughout the entire car. Of course, we shouldn't forget the useful pin in the luggage compartment for shopping bags, two picnic tables on the backs of the front seats, and seven places for drinks, of which at least two in the front door also accept one 1-liter bottle.

In this way, the Touran will take care of the small items, rubbish and similar things that people usually carry with them in the car. What about the passengers themselves? They sit, as we have already mentioned, each in their own place, and the first two passengers sit better than the other three in the second row, but even they, in principle, have no particular reason to complain. It is true that they are more likely to find the narrow roof space the Touran has allocated to them by Volkswagen engineers, as the outer passengers are noticeably displaced towards the outside of the car due to the installation of a mid-section (similar to the outer) seat. But part of the salvation is that when there are only four passengers in the Touran, remove the center seat and place both outer seats a little closer to the center of the car so that both passengers in the second row feel almost as good as they did. in the second row there are two. The first view.

Having already mentioned the first passengers, we will stop for a moment at the driver and his workplace. It's German-style and neat, with all the switches in place and the steering wheel adjustable for height and reach in terms of ergonomics, almost no comment. Adjusting the steering wheel may (depending on the person) take a little more getting used to due to the relatively high setup, but after the first few miles, any complaints about the driver's seat will certainly subside and it's time for praise. Praise the transmission.

Something about the drive

In the Touran test, the main engine task was performed by a 1-liter turbodiesel with direct injection of fuel through the unit-injector system. The maximum power of 9 kilowatts or 74 horsepower was enough for a final speed of 101 kilometers per hour and 175 Newton meters of torque to accelerate from 250 to 0 km / h in 100 seconds. The results don't place such a motorized Touran among sprinters, but it can still be decently fast on its way, so it's not exhausting to gain kilometers. In the latter case, the flexibility of the engine also helps a lot. Namely, it pulls well at idle and beyond, and even for Volkswagen TDI engines, the characteristic rough start of the turbocharger is not felt.

To make the picture even more complete, low fuel consumption is ensured. In the test, it averaged only 7 liters per 1 kilometer and dropped to 100 liters with a very soft leg or increased by 5 hundred kilometers with a very heavy leg. A well-designed six-speed manual transmission, with precise, short and light enough shift lever movements (the transmission does not resist faster shifting), also contributes to the final impression of perfect drive mechanics.

This will only focus on soundproofing, which retains all types of noise relatively well, but still leaves room for improvement in engine noise containment. The problem is caused by the louder “breakout” of typical diesel noise above 3500 rpm, which is still within acceptable limits.

Ride with the Touran

As you've probably figured out by now, the Touran is primarily intended for families, family outings and travel. However, family fathers and mothers do not walk on the roads, so we will devote only a few words to the chapter on driving dynamics. The new chassis (code PQ 35), on which the Touran is installed and on which many of its siblings, cousins and siblings will be installed, turns out to be a little very good in practice.

The Touran's suspension is a bit stiffer than usual due to its tall body (tilts in corners), but it still handles most bumps in the road without a problem, while some criticism deserves only a little nerve jerk on the shorter road. ... waves on the highway. at higher cruising speeds. Like a limousine van, the Touran also thrives on winding roads, where it convinces with a stable and secure position.

The good road feel is complemented by the same stable and reliable brakes. They, with good brake pedal feel and standard ABS support, provide good braking results, as evidenced by the measured braking distance from 100 km / h to standstill in just 38 meters, significantly better than the class average.

Not the most favorable. ...

The price of the new Touran is also "better" than the class average. But given that only a few buyers of this class of car are looking for a very affordable limousine van purchase, Volkswagen (which is obviously still the case) deliberately opted for a higher price range among its peers. So you get a Touran with a 1.9 TDI engine and Trendline equipment package, which is basically already relatively well-equipped (see technical data) at a good 4 million tolar.

The basic package Basis is, of course, cheaper (by 337.000 270.000 SIT), but at the same time there are correspondingly fewer delicacies in it, and you have to or highly recommended to pay extra for both air conditioners (306.000 XNUMX SIT manually, XNUMX XNUMX SIT.automatic). what is the pain threshold. It moves a little higher in the wallet.

... ... Goodbye

So is the Touran 1.9 TDI Trendline worth the huge amount of money you need at a Volkswagen dealership? The answer is yes! The 1.9 TDI engine will more than satisfy the needs for power, flexibility and (un) greed, so using (read: driving) with it will be easy and enjoyable. Touran's care for passengers, small items and luggage, which can be very large, adds a finishing touch. Volkswagen! You've been creative for a long time, but the expectation is more than justified by a very good product!

Overall rating (352/420)

  • Friday missed him by just a few points, but the four is also a very good result, isn't it? This is due to the excellent flexibility of the spacious interior and trunk, the economical and flexible TDI engine and reliable driving performance, VW badges and everything that comes with it, and ... well, what would you list, because you already know everything.

  • Exterior (13/15)

We have no comments on manufacturing accuracy. In the image of a car, designers could afford a little more courage.

  • Interior (126/140)

The main feature of the Touran is its extremely flexible and spacious interior. The selected materials are of sufficient quality, with regard to production. Ergonomics "suitable".

  • Engine, transmission (36

    / 40)

The agile engine and 6-speed gearbox blend perfectly with the family-oriented Touran. Despite the TDI designation, the engine was not the pinnacle of engine technology for a long time.

  • Driving performance (78

    / 95)

A friendly vehicle that is not meant to quell the riot, but for a relaxed and calm ride. On such a trip, he perfectly fulfills his mission.

  • Performance (24/35)

The Touran 1.9 TDI isn't a sprinter, but despite not quite top speed, it can be fast enough on its way that it's not tiring to gain miles.

  • Security (35/45)

Automotive technology evolves and safety equipment evolves with it. Most of the abbreviations (ESP, ABS) are standard equipment and the same goes for airbags.

  • Economy

It's not cheap to buy a new Touran, but it will be even more fun to drive. Even a used Touran, especially with a TDI engine, is expected to maintain its sales value.
