Volkswagen Touran 2.0 TDI (103 kW) Highline

It may seem really funny, even unusual or even paradoxical. But this is true. Every detail of the Touran suggests that it is made to fit or please a real man with a wife and kids, work and social security, and two open loans that go back to the salon seven years later to get the car.

If you place the Touran of this generation at a distance of a meter from the previous one, at first they will look very different, but soon, when the eye scans the details, they become more and more similar. True, the faces are very different, each reflects the time at which they were formed, the tail is also different, but the roof and other visible parts of the supporting cell are the same for both.

Similarly, it is impossible to see the interior, because, of course, there are no load-bearing parts, and the dashboard, that is, the part that is by far the most attractive, at first glance is noticeably different from the previous one, but - completely in the style of this brand - more or less just an evolution of the former. But that's how Volkswagen works, because they've probably figured out that's their key to success.

Touran was created for a young European family with more than one child, but looking at its price, we find that Slovenes are not yet in Europe, since the base 26 thousand euros for such a motor and Highline equipment (plus a good four thousand euros surcharges, such like color, rims, parking assistance with a rear view camera, audio system with navigation, Bluetooth, dynamic chassis, bi-xenon headlights and LED lights) are completely irrational for a (average) young Slovenian family with more than one child. But this is not a Volkswagen problem, this is a problem of the state of our country, which we cannot fight from here.

Due to its design, the Touran continues to be an attractive vehicle for this group of buyers south of Karavanke. Driving slightly elevated (hence pushing the pedals down rather than pushing off yourself), which many people like because of the better visibility and visibility of what's going on in front, and also because when sitting in a car, you don't do it. you have to lower yourself (and even worse, you don’t have to get up when you exit), since the seat is right where the buttock is, the average Slovenian is standing up.

The clutch pedal now has a much shorter travel distance than previous generations of Volkswagens, and that's not the only good thing about the pedals; there is also great left foot support and a great accelerator pedal (mounted below), perhaps a little worried about the significant difference in height between the accelerator and brake, and even more so the crushing of the rubber pad under the pedals. On the right is the gear lever, which is very precise and very short, and the gearshift feedback indicates that shifting is easy.

If the handlebars were to drop a few inches lower, that would be fine, but it's okay to survive. Behind the ring are probably some of the best steering wheel levers - thanks to their mechanics (on and off), length and logic of functions that are easy for the driver to remember. Very similar with the sensors: at the moment they are one of the most transparent, accurate, correct in general and, fortunately, not kitschy (and thanks to whoever canceled the then typical Volkswagen blue lighting, which was not particularly annoying, and also nice as no), the speedometer scale is non-linear (greater distances at lower speeds, less at higher speeds), and the whole picture is rounded off (again) by one of the best on-board computers at the moment - due to logic and a set of control and information. It's just a pity that one of the two buttons inside the gauges on the test Touran gets stuck.

Now more than one child. Unlike the front ones, the three individual seats in the second row are noticeably smaller - their low back height, seat width and length are already visible to the naked eye. In truth, adults sit in them much better than you can tell by eye, but they still don't feel very good. It would be better if there were two wider seats in the back and a third auxiliary one, but, as already said, we are talking about children.

They are more flexible and will not fade due to insufficient lateral support, which is practically non-existent. But the good side of these seats isn't just one; The seats individually move longitudinally by about two decimeters, which already significantly increases the boot, but you can also - again individually - remove them. The procedure is simple, only at the very end of the procedure comes the least pleasant part: each of the seats is quite heavy.

Turan is quite large inside, but the automatic and split climate fit very well with the task entrusted to it. In addition, there is not much interference with its automaticity, if at all (or depending on the desire of the person), its only drawback is that the set temperature value is only visible at night. In practice, this does not bother me at all, and the story with the boxes is especially encouraging. It is long, so not for long: there are many of them, they are large, mostly very useful. Once again: among the competitors, the Touran is one of the best in this regard. We continue this story to the trunk, which is not only almost completely square, but also huge at the base, and thanks to the third row seats, it is also very well regulated with two lights (top and side), two drawers and a 12 volt socket, hooks for bags were not found in the store.

When it rains, the Touran is unfriendly to the intruder, as it sprinkles a lot of water on his neck or seat. Then (and not only) the rear view camera will not be effective enough, it would be better to have a solution with a graphical display on the navigation screen. And again in the rain: the already dim reversing light is of little help, especially at dusk. And also in the rain: the wipers, all three, are great at removing drops and drips, so the transparency is excellent and the rain sensor also works very well.

Times are changing at Volkswagen too, but their TDI is still one of their trump cards. Equipped with a common line, it is quieter, less wobbly and supposedly cleaner, but it should be noted that such a 140 horsepower is a little underpowered for this wagon. No. ... In general, it rides well if it's a normal ride at (and above) the permitted speeds, even for what it is capable of safely overtaking on country roads, only the dynamics are slightly protected. There is enough torque in the first two gears, so the Touran gets a little nervous at full throttle, but a full load of the car or going uphill quickly takes all the power. He gets a little lazy. Okay, for about three thousand, you get 30 extra horses with the same engine and DSG gearbox.

However, if you stay with this combination of drives, you should know that the car starts to wake up just below 2.000 rpm (below this value is very lazy), breathes well at 2.000, pulls satisfactorily up to 3.500, 4.000 is the upper limit. the limit of reason, and spins up to 5.000 rpm. It even sounds very soft, but it only happens up to third gear and with torment, and in fourth gear it spins “only” up to 4.800 rpm. But this means that the Touran then moves at a speed of about 180 kilometers per hour. In any case, this diesel also has such a nature that it shows low fuel consumption and a long service life from 2.000 to 3.500 rpm without the car losing much power. Even if.

In fact, the consumption of this diesel fuel is least of all dependent on traction: even the largest "clogging" with the gas pedal is unlikely to lead to a consumption of more than 10 liters per 100 kilometers. In the city, it consumes up to eight, and outside (within) about 6 liters per 5 kilometers. On individual gears, the counters say the following: per 100 kilometers per hour, it consumes 130, 8, 6, 6, 6, 5 and 6 liters per 5 kilometers (that is, in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth gears), and 2 without third course) 100, 160, 8, 9 and 8, 6 liters per 8 km. At a speed of 2 kilometers per hour in sixth gear, the engine develops 100 rpm and consumes 100 liters per 1.700 kilometers, while immediately at higher speeds these are numbers 4 and 3.

Of course, the rest of the mechanics are such that they still have huge reserves; The steering wheel is excellent, one of the best, and easy to steer with. The chassis handles even the most difficult tasks with ease: on long, fast corners, the road is very neutral at the physical boundary, the ESP stays idling at the same length, and in short corners the carriage loads the front wheels, which makes it difficult. the layout and body shape are quite typical for this mechanics. The test Touran was also equipped with a dynamic chassis that the driver configures with a button. It switches between comfort, normal and sport programs; The differences are small, but they are, which can only be seen on long journeys and especially in the comfort of passengers.

It is such a Turan, of course, that cannot satisfy all tastes, but nevertheless it is a good example of taxonomy. An example of how to systematically combine all the wishes and requirements of customers, backed by the experience of designers, in a car that has more than the average father, who has more than one child, and their mother usually wants.

Here and there we hear why some Volkswagen are so successful on a European scale.

Face to face: Sasha Kapetanovich

I usually always complain if I sit high in the car and the driving position is “bus”. But this is what I liked most about the new Turan. Namely, despite the high position, the posture behind the wheel is pleasant, not tiring. Even otherwise, it seems that the Touran is designed to send out a questionnaire to all previous Touran buyers and then take into account their wishes. I just don't know where the Turanians put their cell phones because I just squeeze mine into a drink holder.

Overall rating (351/420)

  • Despite more or less only slightly stronger renovations, it still leads the competition. He received excellent and very good grades in most of the subjects.

  • Exterior (13/15)

This is not the kind of variety that will warm the hearts of young and old, but perhaps the most beautiful among the rivals. Slightly imprecise joints.

  • Interior (107/140)

Everywhere he collects excellent and very good marks, with the exception of the second type of seats, which are too small.

  • Engine, transmission (57

    / 40)

The engine is a little weak, which is noticeable at slightly increased loads. Excellent gearbox and steering gear.

  • Driving performance (57

    / 95)

A car that satisfies any driver and is equally enjoyable in smooth or dynamic driving.

  • Performance (30/35)

Relatively low usable engine speed and slight engine malnutrition and therefore slightly poor maneuverability.

  • Security (48/45)

Only the latest generation safety devices are missing.

  • Economy

It is one of the best in terms of fuel consumption, regardless of driving style and driving style. Even a small loss in value.
