Volkswagen: three of its models received high safety ratings from the IIHS, safety system

Find out which three Volkswagen models performed well in safety tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The German automaker has announced that three of its models have received high safety ratings in a new side impact test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

These are the 4 Volkswagen Atlas 2021, the Atlas Cross Sport and the ID.2022 EV, all of which score well in the new IIHS side impact test.

And it is that he did tests on 8 medium SUVs, of which only 10 got good qualifications, including three Volkswagen models.

ID.4 EV, the only electric vehicle in the test

"The Volkswagen ID.4 EV was the only EV tested and was one of two models tested and scored well in all areas of evaluation," the German firm said in a statement on its online page.

The scores in the new IIHS test include assessments of unit design, cage safety, and driver and rear seat passenger injury measures.

Advanced technology

It also covers protective measures for the head, neck, torso and pelvis.

The side test was originally introduced in 2003, but the IIHS recently updated it in late 2021 with improved technology that uses a heavier barrier moving at a higher speed to simulate a vehicle impact.

This means 82% more power, mimicking the size and impact of a modern SUV.

The behavior of the occupants

In addition, the design of the impact barrier has also changed to simulate a real SUV or truck when impacting another unit.

The lateral score takes into account the pattern of occupant behavior at the time of the impact, as well as the severity of injuries reflected by the driver and rear seat dummies on the left side.

SID-II dummies in the test

The operation and protection of airbags in the heads of passengers, in this case dummies, are also taken into account.

The German firm emphasized that the SID-II dummy, which was used in two seating positions, is either a small woman or a 12-year-old boy.

seat belts

Cars that scored well retained passenger behavior well during the impact.

Therefore, measurements taken from dummies should not indicate a high risk of serious injury.

Another of the factors to get well qualified in the test has to do with the side airbags and the seat belts must prevent the passengers' heads from hitting any part inside the car.

The Importance of Airbags and Seat Belts

Volkswagen indicated how important it is for the company that its cars have airbags and other safety systems for the driver and passengers.

“All Volkswagen SUVs offer six airbags as standard, as well as a host of electronic safety systems such as anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC), as well as a rearview camera. German company.

Volkswagen in the top 10

Things that no doubt helped Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport and ID.4 earn good marks and place in the top ten on the test of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

“The 4 and 2021 Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport and ID.2022 models include standard Front Assist (forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian control); Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
