Volvo achieves climate neutrality at its Torslanda plant, the oldest ever

Volvo is celebrating climate neutrality at its factory in Torsland, Sweden. This is the second plant of the company to receive this award after the brand achieved it in Šovde.

Volvo's path to absolute neutrality continues with a new milestone: the Thorsland plant has been declared climate neutral. The company already achieved this recognition in 2018 with the establishment of the Sködvé engine plant, a very important milestone, but this new feat is also tied to its history as the Torsland plant is the oldest of them all. To make this claim, Volvo has had to focus on several adjustments that have been made since 2008, when the brand managed to make the electricity used at these facilities sustainable. Now heating, thanks to the recycling of generated heat and biogas, is a sustainable connection that Volvo has brought in to meet the requirements.

The Swedish brand has also significantly reduced the energy consumption of its operations, saving at least 2020 megawatt hours (MWh) over a 7,000 year period, which equates to the energy of approximately 450 Swedish homes throughout the year. According to Javier Varela, Head of Industrial Operations and Quality at Volvo Cars: "The establishment of Torslanda as our first climate-neutral car plant is a milestone." “We are committed to achieving a climate-friendly production network by 2025, and this achievement is a sign of our determination as we continually work to reduce our environmental footprint.”

To achieve its goal of becoming completely neutral, Volvo will need to make efforts on several fronts that go beyond its internal environmental policy. The company will need to reach a consensus with local governments and related companies that will be able to provide what is needed. Volvo, moreover, said that its plans are much more ambitious: it is not only about electrification, but also about electrification.
