Volvo Short Inline 6

A series of inline 6-cylinder Volvo Short Inline 6 gasoline engines was produced from 2006 to 2016 in atmospheric and turbo versions.

The Volvo Short Inline 6 series of inline 6-cylinder engines was produced from 2006 to 2016 at the Ford plant in Bridgend and was installed on front-wheel drive models on the P3 platform. The line consisted of atmospheric units of 3.2 liters, as well as 3.0-liter turbo engines.

Atmospheric engines Volvo SI6 3.2 liters

The Short Inline 6 range of engines was essentially a development of the popular Volvo Modular Engine series. By design, there is a similar in-line aluminum 6-cylinder block with cast-iron liners, an aluminum 24-valve head with hydraulic lifters, distributed fuel injection. Also used here is a proprietary system for changing the geometry of the intake manifold VIS.

The transverse arrangement under the hood required a non-trivial timing drive design: the camshafts are connected to the crankshaft using a chain and a gearbox of several gears, and the auxiliary units sit on a separate shaft behind the engine and are driven by a belt. The intake shaft is equipped with a VCT phase shifter and a CPS cam profile switching system.

The series includes 4 internal combustion engines, and B6324S2 and B6324S4 are rare PZEV versions for the American market:

3.2 liters (3192 cm³ 84 × 96 mm)
B6324S238 hp / 320 Nm
B6324S2225 hp / 300 Nm
B6324S4231 hp / 300 Nm
B6324S5243 hp / 320 Nm

Turbocharged Volvo SI6 3.0 liter engines

At the same time as atmospheric units, turbo engines of a slightly smaller volume were also assembled. In addition to the presence of a twin-scroll turbocharger, these engines had a number of differences: phase regulators were present on both shafts, but the CPS and VIS systems had to be abandoned.

In 2010, the atmospheric and turbocharged versions of the Short Inline 6 engine were upgraded. The goal of the update was to reduce friction: there was a DLC coating of the internal surfaces, different crankshaft liners, an attachment belt tensioner and an aluminum pump.

There are only three ICEs in the series, with the B6304T5 being a particularly powerful version for Polestar models:

3.0 turbo (2953 cm³ 82 × 93.2 mm)
B6304T2285 hp / 400 Nm
B6304T4304 hp / 440 Nm
B6304T5350 hp / 500 Nm
