Driving in fog. What to remember?

Driving in fog. What to remember? Fog or urban conditions, often smog, significantly reduce visibility and thus make it difficult, for example, to judge the distance and speed of other vehicles, noticing vertical signs or pedestrians in traffic lanes.

In such conditions, it is especially important to drive slowly, take your time and drive predictably for other road users, advise instructors from the Renault Driving School.

 – With limited ability to assess the traffic situation solely on the basis of visual impressions, the use of hearing organs becomes important. Both pedestrians and drivers will hear an approaching car before they see it. That's why drivers should turn off the radio and pedestrians should refrain from talking on the phone or listening to music while crossing the road, says Zbigniew Veseli, director of Renault's safe driving school.

Fog lights should turn on when visibility is less than 50 meters and turn off when visibility improves. If the fog lights, especially the rear ones, are on, they can dazzle other drivers in fine weather. In fog, you can not use road lights, i.e. long. They dissipate the fog, so visibility is worse rather than better. Lines on the road can be a guide to make driving easier in such difficult conditions. They allow you to control the position of the car on the road and keep it in the lane.

– When the driver needs to park the car on the side of the road, he should position the car so that it is completely out of the lane, and then turn on the hazard warning lights. Such stops are safer to avoid until the fog clears, coaches advise.
