Everyone has experienced a dead car battery from time to time. This is a common occurrence, especially in winter when batteries have to work even harder to get you where you want to go. Fortunately, there is a solution. A portable car battery charger can help keep you moving if your battery is slowly dying or running low, so you should always have one in your emergency kit.

Now, how do you use a car battery charger? It's easy if you have some knowledge on your side.

Optimal charging

We hope you never have a dead car battery to recharge, but if you do, make sure you understand how your particular charger works. Read the instructions to know exactly how to use it. Each charger is slightly different, but generally it's just a matter of connecting the clips to the appropriate pins on the battery and then plugging the charger into a household outlet.

Connecting the charger

Once you know all the features of a car battery charger, it's time to connect it to your car battery. You can do this with the battery inside or outside the car - it doesn't matter. Simply attach the positive clip to the positive terminal on the battery and the negative clip to the negative terminal. The positive is red and the negative is black, so all you have to do is match the colors. You will bring your dead car battery back to life in no time.

Now set the amps and volts on the charger. If you want to charge the battery slowly, set the current to low. This is actually the best way to charge your battery, but if you need to start your car quickly, you can use a higher amperage.

Charging

Now all you need to do is connect the car charger to the battery and wait for it to charge to the right level. Most chargers turn off automatically when the battery is fully charged. Others may require you to periodically check the watch face on your charger to make sure you are not overcharging your battery.

Disconnecting the charger

When the car battery is fully charged, all you have to do is unplug the charger and unplug the cables in the reverse order they were connected. After that, you should be good to go.

If your battery is constantly draining, it may indicate that it has reached its expiration date. It may also indicate a problem in your car's electrical system. In such cases, it is better not to rely on the charger - have a professional mechanic check the problem.
