VW Golf version 1.9 TDI DPF

In fact, interestingly enough, the Golf 5 received the Variant version just a year before its prominence, and is expected to be replaced by a sixth one next year. Of course, the variant will remain created on the basis of the five, since we cannot expect to receive a new one earlier than in a few years.

Since it was created on the basis of Golf, it, of course, remains for the most part Golf. This is why it sometimes feels like Volkswagen's engineers have missed a great opportunity to make the Variant not just a Golf with a big hole in the back, but something more. It is more than 30 centimeters longer than the five-door Golf, but, unfortunately, it got its full height behind the rear wheels. This is why the longest Golf of all time, according to Volkswagen, has (in addition to the already disproportionately large rear overhang) more than half a cubic meter of luggage space. A huge number, but not so large that none of the competitors could compare with it.

What does half a cubic meter of trunk mean in practice (up to the height of the back of the rear seats; if you load up to the ceiling, you can increase this number by at least half)? The fact that your luggage, even if you go to sea with your family, you don't have to carefully put it in the car, but load it as you carry it into the car - and there is still a small chance that you will win.” t be able to pull a soft roller over it. Thus, the fact that the partition net, which allows you to safely load the car under the ceiling, is not standard, but requires payment, becomes less important.

Where did Volkswagen engineers miss the opportunity to make the Variant not only luggage-friendly, but family-friendly? Where Opel engineers did not disregard this. The Astra Karavan is 25 centimeters longer than the five-door Astra, but it went nine centimeters at the expense of a longer wheelbase. This, in turn, directly means a significant increase in interior length and therefore much more (longitudinal) space in the rear seats. The Golf Variant has the same rear seat as the classic five-door Golf and is overall slightly above the class average. It is a pity that the Variant, in addition to its luxurious external dimensions (more than four and a half meters), is not spatially luxurious even for rear passengers.

In front, of course, everything is like in a regular Golf: comfortable seats, a wide range of settings, too high a brake pedal setting and obviously too long clutch pedal travel, excellent ergonomics, but a completely Germanic tough atmosphere. In short, it has everything that makes many people love or dislike golf.

The test car had a 1-litre four-cylinder TDI engine under the hood, VW's farewell pump-injector injection system, and a five-speed manual transmission. 9 "horses" - this is not much either on paper or in practice, but they are just enough for undemanding everyday use. Overtaking with a fully loaded car can be a little nerve-wracking, and with just five gears in the transmission, the gear ratios are pretty wide, so the driver is forcing the engine to rev higher than they'd like (due to noise and fuel consumption). If possible, opt for a two-liter turbodiesel with a six-speed gearbox.

When the driver comes to terms with the capabilities of the engine, the consumption becomes advantageously low - in the test it was just under eight liters, and on long trips and leisurely driving on the highway, it spins around six liters. Affordable for the family budget, right?

It's a shame we can't say that for the price. The good 21K (the test model jumped by XNUMXK due to some extra premiums) is considerable, since the competition here may be more favorable. However, we have the feeling that this fact of the number of Golf Variant sales will make little difference. ...

  • Correct performance of a van of this class with a huge trunk, but also a missed opportunity to be a Golf option much more than just a "Golf with an ass" ...
