VW recalls over 4,000 Golf GTI and Golf R vehicles due to loose engine covers

Volkswagen and NHTSA are recalling the Golf GTI and Golf R models due to an issue with engine covers that could come into contact with other components and cause a fire. A total of 4,269 units were affected in this recall.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R hatchbacks are pretty hot cars - too hot in this case. On March 16, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a recall regarding some versions of these vehicles. On affected models, the engine cover may come loose during aggressive driving maneuvers and melt if it comes into contact with certain transmission components such as the turbocharger. This obviously increases the chances of a fire under the hood, which is never a good thing.

How many models are affected by this issue?

This callback is potentially applicable to 4,269 units of the 2022 GTI and Golf R, 3404 units of the former and 865 units of the latter. A smaller number of vehicles are also being recalled in Canada. If the engine cover moves, owners may notice a burning smell, which is the main sign that the trim panel has come loose from its mounts.

What solution does VW offer to this problem?

If this problem affects your VW, the automaker will remove the car's engine cover. As soon as the reworked part becomes available, it will be installed. Naturally, this work will be done free of charge by Volkswagen dealers.

In the meantime, try to calm down so that the engine cover of your car does not open.
