The compressor of an automobile air conditioner is an electromechanical device. Its design is based on several hollow pistons and a swash plate located on the shaft. It is this washer that makes the pistons move. The shaft is driven by a special belt from the crankshaft. In addition, the compressor is equipped with an electromagnetic clutch that engages the pressure plate and the pump drive pulley.

Capacitor

Typically, the condenser is installed in the front of the engine compartment next to the main radiator. It is sometimes referred to as an air conditioner radiator as it has a similar design and performs similar functions. The radiator cools the heated antifreeze, and the condenser cools the hot freon. There is an electric fan for forced air blowing of the condenser.

Receiver

Another name for a receiver is a filter drier. Its role is to clean the refrigerant from moisture and wear products. The receiver consists of:

• cylindrical body filled with adsorbent;
• filter element;
• inlet and outlet fittings.

Silica gel or aluminum oxide powder is usually used as an adsorbent in car dryers.

Evaporator and expansion valve

An evaporator is a device in which the refrigerant changes from a liquid state to a gaseous state. It generates and gives off cold, that is, it performs functions opposite to those of a radiator. The transformation of the liquid refrigerant into a gas occurs with the help of a thermostatic valve, which is a variable cross-section throttle.

In the evaporator, freon passes from a liquid state to a gaseous state.

The evaporator is usually installed in the heater module. The intensity of the flow of cold air is regulated by switching the operating modes of the built-in fan.

Main hoses

The refrigerant moves from one node to another through a hose system. Depending on the design of the air conditioner and the location of its elements, they can have different lengths and configurations. All hose connections are reinforced with seals.

The principle of operation of a car air conditioner

When the air conditioner is off, the compressor pulley is idling. When enabled, the following occurs.

1. Power is supplied to the electromagnetic clutch.
2. The clutch engages and the pressure plate engages with the pulley.
3. As a result, the compressor begins to work, the pistons of which compress the gaseous freon and turn it into a liquid state.
4. The refrigerant is heated and enters the condenser.
5. In the condenser, freon cools a little and enters the receiver for cleaning from moisture and wear products.
6. From the filter, freon under pressure passes through a thermostatic valve, where it again passes into a gaseous state.
7. The refrigerant enters the evaporator, where it boils and evaporates, cooling the internal surfaces of the device.
8. The cooled metal of the evaporator reduces the temperature of the air circulating between its tubes and fins.
9. With the help of an electric fan, a directed flow of cold air is formed.

The manufacturer never completed the VAZ 2107 with air conditioners. The exception is cars produced in Egypt by VAZ partner Lada Egypt. However, any owner of a VAZ 2107 can install an air conditioner on their car on their own.

Obviously, installing an air conditioner in any case will increase the load on the power unit. Result:

• engine power will decrease by about 15–20%;
• fuel consumption will increase by 1-2 liters per 100 kilometers.

In addition, two electric air conditioner fans will increase the load on the generator. The regular current source of the carburetor "seven", designed for 55 A, may not be able to cope with it. Therefore, it is better to replace it with a more productive one. For these purposes, a generator from an injection VAZ 2107 is suitable, producing 73 A at the output. In the "seven" with a distributed injection system, the generator does not need to be changed.

Installing an air conditioner with a hanging evaporator

The process of installing an air conditioner with an evaporator pendant is somewhat simpler, since it does not require changing the design of the dashboard and heater. This will require:

• additional crankshaft pulley;
• compressor;
• compressor bracket with tension roller;
• compressor drive belt;
• condenser with electric fan;
• receiver;
• receiver mount;
• suspended evaporator;
• bracket for evaporator;
• main pipes.

Since the design does not provide for a refrigerant pump drive on the VAZ 2107, you will have to do it yourself. To do this, connect the crankshaft and the compressor shaft. Considering that the crankshaft pulley simultaneously drives the generator and the pump with one belt, it would be a mistake to install the compressor there. Therefore, an additional pulley will be required, which will be fixed on the main one. It is impossible to make such a part without special equipment - it is better to turn to a professional turner. The additional pulley must have holes for attachment to the main one and the same groove as the compressor shaft. The result should be a double pulley, which without any problems will take the place of the standard part. After that, you can proceed to the installation of the compressor.

Compressor installation

It is better to buy a VAZ 2107 air conditioner compressor bracket ready-made. There are installation kits available that include:

• the mount itself with a tension roller;
• drive belt;
• additional pulley for the crankshaft.

The compressor installation procedure is as follows:

1. We check the fastening and the possibility of fixing the tension roller.
2. We install the compressor on the bracket and, tightening the nuts, fix it.

3. We try on the design and determine which bolts and studs on the cylinder block we will attach it to.
4. From the cylinder block, unscrew the bolt on the front cover of the engine, another bolt on top and two nuts from the studs.
5. We combine the mounting holes and fix the structure on the block.

6. We put the drive belt on the roller, crankshaft pulleys and compressor.
7. By shifting the roller, we stretch the belt.

Since the compressor is in the off state, it will not be possible to check the belt tension immediately. In this position, the pulley of the device will rotate idle.

Capacitor installation

The condenser is attached to the front of the engine compartment in front of the cooling radiator, partially blocking its working surface. However, this will not affect the operation of the cooling system. Installation is done in this order:

1. We dismantle the radiator grille.
2. Disconnect the electric fan from the condenser.
3. We try on the capacitor and mark on the left stiffener of the body the places for the holes for the communication hoses.
4. We remove the capacitor. Using a drill and a file, we make holes.
   

   In the right stiffener, you need to make holes for the main hoses
5. Remove the cooling fan. If this is not done, it will interfere with further installation.
6. Install the capacitor in place.
7. We fix the capacitor to the body with metal screws.

8. Install the radiator fan.
9. Attach the fan to the front of the condenser.

10. We return the radiator grille to its place.

Installing the receiver

The installation of the receiver is quite simple and is carried out according to the following algorithm:

1. We find an empty seat in the front of the engine compartment.
2. We drill holes for mounting the bracket.
3. We fix the bracket to the body with self-tapping screws.

Hanging evaporator installation

The most convenient place to install an outboard evaporator is under the panel on the passenger side. There he will not interfere with anyone and will simplify the laying of communications. Installation work is carried out in the following order:

1. We move the carpet covering the partition between the passenger compartment and the engine compartment.
2. We find a rubber plug on the partition and remove it with a screwdriver. This plug covers the round hole through which the hoses will be routed.
   

   Main hoses and power wires are laid through the hole in the partition of the engine compartment
3. With a clerical knife we ​​make the same hole in the carpet.
4. Putting the carpet back in place.
5. Remove the shelf under the glove box.
6. Behind the shelf we find a metal rib of the body frame.
7. Using self-tapping screws for metal, we attach the evaporator bracket to the rib.

Line laying

For laying the line, special hoses with fittings, nuts and rubber seals will be required. They are commercially available, but before buying, in order not to be mistaken with the length, you should measure the distance between the nodes. You will need four hoses, with which the system will close according to the following scheme:

• evaporator-compressor;

• compressor-condenser;
  

  Through the compressor-condenser hose, the refrigerant is supplied to the condenser
• capacitor-receiver;
  

  The condenser-receiver hose is used to supply refrigerant from the condenser to the receiver

  Through the receiver-evaporator hose, freon enters from the receiver to the evaporator through a thermostatic valve

Connecting the air conditioner to the onboard network

There is no single scheme for connecting an air conditioner, so the electrical part of the installation may seem complicated. First you need to connect the evaporator unit. It is better to take power (+) for it from the ignition switch or cigarette lighter through a relay and a fuse, and connect the mass to any convenient part of the body. In exactly the same way, the compressor, or rather, its electromagnetic clutch, is connected to the network. The condenser fan can also be connected without a relay, but through a fuse. All devices have one start button, which can be displayed on the control panel and installed in a convenient location.

When you press the start button, you should hear a click of the electromagnetic clutch. This means that the compressor has started to work. At the same time, the fans inside the evaporator and the condenser fan should turn on. If everything happened in this way, the devices are connected correctly. Otherwise, contact a professional auto electrician.

Installing an air conditioner with a conventional evaporator

Consider installing an air conditioner from another car using the example of a BYD F-3 (Chinese "C" class sedan). His air conditioner has a similar device and consists of the same components. The exception is the evaporator, which does not look like a block, but a conventional radiator with a fan.

Installation work begins from the engine compartment. It is necessary to install the compressor, condenser and receiver in accordance with the instructions above. When installing the evaporator, it will be necessary to completely remove the panel and dismantle the heater. The evaporator must be placed in the housing and placed under the panel, and the housing itself must be connected with a thick hose to the heater. The result is an analogue of a blowing device that will supply cooled air to the stove and distribute it through the air ducts. Work is performed in the following order:

1. We cut the BYD F-3 stove block and separate the evaporator from it. The incision site is covered with a plastic or metal plate. We seal the connection with automotive sealant.
   

   The hole in the heater must be closed with a plastic or metal plate and seal the junction with a sealant
2. We lengthen the air duct with a corrugation. Any rubber hose of suitable diameter can be used.
   

   The duct pipe must be lengthened with a corrugation
3. We fix the fan with the case on the entrance window. In our case, this is a “snail” from the VAZ 2108. We coat the joints with sealant.

4. We make a bracket from an aluminum bar.
5. We install the assembled evaporator in the cabin from the passenger seat. We fasten it to the stiffener of the body.
   

   The evaporator housing is attached through a bracket to the body stiffener under the panel on the passenger seat side.
6. With a grinder we make a cut in the partition of the engine compartment for the nozzles of the device.
   

   To lay the hoses in the bulkhead of the engine compartment, you need to make a hole
7. We make a hole in the heater block under the corrugation and install the heater. We connect the evaporator with the stove.
   

   The junction of the hose and the body of the stove must be lubricated with sealant
8. We try on the panel and cut out sections from it that will interfere with the installation. Install the panel in place.
9. We close the system in a circle with the help of main hoses.

10. We lay the wiring and connect the air conditioner to the on-board network.

The ability to install climate control systems on the VAZ 2107

Climate control is a system for maintaining a certain temperature in the car. It is enough for the driver to set a comfortable temperature for himself, and the system will maintain it, automatically turning on heating or air conditioning and adjusting the intensity of the air flow.

The first domestic car with climate control was the VAZ 2110. The system was controlled by a primitive five-position controller SAUO VAZ 2110 with two handles on the control panel. With the help of the first, the driver set the temperature, and the second set the pressure of the air entering the passenger compartment. The controller received data on the temperature in the cabin from a special sensor and sent a signal to a micromotor reducer, which, in turn, set the heater damper in motion. Thus, a comfortable microclimate was provided in the VAZ 2110 cabin. Modern climate control systems are much more complex. They regulate not only the temperature of the air, but also its humidity and pollution.

VAZ 2107 cars have never been equipped with such equipment. However, some craftsmen still install climate control modules from the VAZ 2110 in their cars. The expediency of such tuning is debatable, because its whole point is not to be distracted by adjusting the position of the heater damper and the locking mechanism of the stove tap. And in the summer, climate control from the “tens” is generally useless - you can’t connect the air conditioner to it and you won’t achieve automatic adjustment of its operation. If we consider the possibility of installing climate control systems from foreign cars on the VAZ 2107, then it is easier to buy a new car with all the necessary equipment.
