Exhaust line: function, model and price

The exhaust line contains several components needed to redirect combustion products engine outside of your vehicle. Its composition will differ slightly depending on whether it is a gasoline or diesel car, but it will fulfill the same role.

💨 How does the exhaust pipe work?

The exhaust line plays a 3-sided role as it allows one side discharge engine gases outside the vehicle, reducing noise and harmful emissions... Most cars are equipped with a single tailpipe.

However, high-end, high-powered cars are present two V-shaped exhaust lines on either side of the chassis.

The exhaust line consists of 10 different elements:

1. Le manifold : located at the outlet of the cylinders of your engine, it contains a bore for each cylinder. These channels are subsequently found in a single channel in the exhaust line.
2. Exhaust hose: also called an exhaust braid, it is a flexible joint that resists various vibrations in the vehicle.
3. Le catalyst : Its purpose is to convert pollutant gases such as carbon monoxide into less polluting elements.
4. Le SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) for diesel engines : Thanks to AdBlue injection, it converts nitrogen oxide into environmentally friendly gases.
5. Le particulate filter : necessary for filtering contaminating particles. It can filter up to 95% of polluting emissions.
6. Relaxation pot : This is a pressure and exhaust velocity reducer before the gases reach the muffler.
7. Le silent : reduces the noise level of gases when they are discharged.
8. La Lambda probe : measures the amount of substances in the exhaust gas. It also regulates the dosage of the air-fuel mixture for the combustion of the engine.
9. temperature sensor particulate filter : located at the DPF inlet and outlet, it communicates with the computer for DPF injection and regeneration.
10. Pressure probe : It measures the pressure in the exhaust line and lets you know if the DPF is clogged.

💡 What to choose between titanium or stainless steel exhaust pipe?

The exhaust line can be made from 4 different materials. Depending on this life line will be different and the performance of your car will not be the same. Therefore, depending on your preference, you can choose one of the following 4 components:

• Steel line : it is the least effective material, as it quickly deteriorates under the influence of corrosion, humidity and temperature changes;
• Titanium line : much lighter than steel, durable. However, its ability to tolerate heat well makes it more susceptible to burns;
• Stainless steel line : sturdy and durable, sold at a low price. On the other hand, it is heavier in weight and requires regular maintenance;
• Carbon line : It is also durable but sensitive to vibration and heat.

⚠️ What are the symptoms of the HS exhaust line?

An exhaust line problem can arise from one of the many components that make up it. Thus, you may not always be able to pinpoint the exact source of the problem, but you will be able to pinpoint the symptoms that we are going to list. If you have an HS exhaust line, you will run into the following situations:

• Motor makes unusual noise ;
• Your car's exhaust noise gets louder ;
• Excessive consumption fuel felt ;
• Exhaust line damaged or cracked ;
• There are leaks in the exhaust line.

If you notice any of these symptoms, your vehicle should be immediately inspected by a mechanic in a workshop. He will be able to identify the defective part in the exhaust line and replace it if necessary.

💳 How much does it cost to replace an exhaust line?

It is very rare that all components of the exhaust system need to be replaced. The muffler is usually defective.

Indeed, it is a wearing part that needs to be replaced every 80 kilometer... The price for its replacement fluctuates within 100 € and 300 € (including parts and work) depending on the car model. If other parts are broken, the bill can quickly rise to large amounts.

An exhaust line is essential for the proper functioning of your vehicle and, in particular, its engine. It allows the exhaust gases to escape, filtering them to limit their contamination. So it is an element that is part of the approach to reducing vehicle pollution!
