Exhaust pipe in a car - task, connection, smoke

The damage to the exhaust system can be recognized by the increased noise of the unit. Of course, nothing special changes in it, but opening the system can cause a sudden noise. You will feel good when the middle muffler comes off, the exhaust pipe burns out, or the exhaust manifold is disconnected from the cylinder block.. For defects of this type, some use welding of the exhaust pipe, gluing, using connectors. And while these might be good ways for a while, there's no substitute for exchanging for a new item.

Smoke from the exhaust pipe - what does it indicate?

Looking at the tip of the exhaust pipe, 3 colors of smoke can be seen:

● white;

● black;

● blue.

Only by the color you can guess what is happening with your engine. White smoke is usually the result of water entering the exhaust system, especially when the vehicle is parked outside on very humid days. If the water from the exhaust pipe (in the form of steam) subsides after a while, you have nothing to worry about. It is worse when white smoke is constantly visible while driving. This means that the cooling system is leaking and liquid enters the combustion chamber. This is not always a cylinder head gasket failure, because sometimes the EGR cooler is the cause of the problem.

What does black smoke from an exhaust pipe mean and what does blue smoke mean?

If the exhaust pipe is sooty and black smoke is coming out of it, you probably have a serious problem with the fuel system. Defects are almost exclusively associated with diesel engines because when diesel fuel is burned, this type of smoke is produced. If you see it during fast acceleration, then there is usually nothing to worry about, because a sharp press on the accelerator pedal is not always compatible with the “take-off” of the turbine. Lots of fuel + little air = lots of smoke. When black smoke is still visible, it is likely that the injection system needs to be diagnosed. The turbine can also run out.

The last color of these, blue, is often associated with engine oil burnout and can indicate worn valve seals or damaged piston rings.

Exhaust pipe fitting - what to do after unsealing?

Much depends on where the damage to the exhaust system occurred. The most difficult thing to deal with a crack on the exhaust manifold, which most often needs to be replaced. It is also one of the most costly breakdowns as it requires the dismantling of a large number of components. However, if the exhaust pipe itself burned out, a connector can be used. This requires detaching the exhaust system components and applying a special high temperature sealing paste to make the effect permanent. After the whole procedure, the connector must be twisted.

Where does the fire from the exhaust pipe come from?

Exhaust firing is the result of deliberate actions or incorrect engine settings. In sports cars, this type of sound and light effect is responsible, for example, for the anti-retardation system, as well as for the insertion of the spark plug and gas nozzle into the exhaust nozzle. The exhaust pipe can also breathe fire due to an excessively rich air-fuel mixture and a delayed injection angle. While in racing cars this is more of a predictable effect, if not intentional, in a civilian car it can be a bit of a hassle and end up with a burnt bumper.

The exhaust system is a treasure trove of knowledge about your engine and its accessories. So don't underestimate what you see from its tip. Experts know how to clean the exhaust pipe, although sometimes it will be optimal to replace it. Remember that these elements of the system have different sizes and, for example, a 55 mm and 75 mm exhaust pipe are completely different components. It is worth taking care of the exhaust pipes without using them excessively.
