Replacing spark plugs is a standard procedure, and an experienced driver knows where and at what price to purchase suitable spark plugs for his car. Experience accumulates with every hundred kilometers traveled, every repair or maintenance.
For optimal engine performance, parts should be purchased in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. However, it may not be possible to follow these recommendations and the need for replacement may occur outside of routine maintenance. What to do in such a situation? Is it possible to replace spark plugs with more affordable analogues?
How to install a new spark plug?
First of all, it is important that the threaded part of the new part matches the standard one. This seems obvious, since with the wrong pitch and thread diameter, the part will not install correctly. However, there is a caveat: if you install a longer one instead of a standard short spark plug, the engine may not work satisfactorily at best, and in the worst case, this can lead to serious engine repairs. Not all spark plugs can be adjusted, especially those without side electrodes.
It is also important that the thermal characteristics of the new part are close to the required operating conditions. The incense number, which reflects the ability to heat up at different engine temperatures, must be taken into account. Spark plugs operate under high pressure and electrical voltage of 20 to 30 thousand volts. The hot gas instantly replaces a portion of the fuel-air mixture at ambient temperature.
Domestic candles have a censer number from 8 to 26. Cold candles have a higher censer number, and hot candles have a smaller number. Foreign manufacturers do not have a unified classification, so a table of interchangeability is presented.
Spark plug operation within a temperature range of 600-900 C is considered normal. If the temperature is too high, detonation of the combustible mixture is possible, and if the temperature is too low, unburned products accumulate on the contacts and cannot be washed away by a stream of hot gas.
It is recommended to install cold spark plugs on high-powered internal combustion engines, and hot spark plugs on low-powered ones. Failure to do this can lead to problems such as self-ignition of the fuel mixture when installing a hot plug on a high-performance engine or the formation of a thick layer of soot on a cold plug on a regular engine.
How to choose the right spark plugs?
The interchangeability table provides information on which spark plugs are ideal for replacing the standard equipment. It is important to note that a very important condition is the serviceability of the entire ignition system. If there are problems in the system, even installing the most expensive spark plugs will not solve the situation.
Do car spark plugs have to be a specific brand?
It is not necessary to use spark plugs of the same brand as those installed in your car. However, it is recommended to replace existing spark plugs with similar models.
For example, some vehicles perform better when using spark plugs made from iridium materials. In this case, Avtotachki advises avoiding switching to copper or platinum spark plugs.
If your vehicle is normally serviced by a mechanic recommended by your dealer, this is the most reliable way to select the correct replacement spark plugs. However, this approach may also cost you more.

What happens if you use the wrong spark plugs?
