Wordle is an online word game that has taken the world by storm. Why?

Five columns and six rows straight from the spreadsheet is all it takes to create a free browser game that will be one of the biggest hits of the year. What is the "Word" and what is its phenomenon?

"Word" - what is it?

When Josh Wardlela was first sketching a small browser game in 2021, he never dreamed in his wildest dreams that his project would be such a giant hit. Initially, he did not even intend to make it available to the wider public - it was a little entertainment for him and his partner. However, when Word went online at the end of 2021, it took the world by storm in a matter of months, reaching up to 2 million players a day. Wordle is loved by everyone - young and old, native English speakers and foreigners. The popularity turned out to be so great that the title was acquired, among others, by the well-known from his crossword puzzles “The New York Times”.

"Word" - the rules of the game

What are the rules of the wordle game? Very simple! Every day, all players around the world are challenged to guess the same five letter word in English. We have six attempts, but after each shot we know a little more - we get information about the letters we used in subsequent attempts:

  • Gray color - letters in the wrong word
  • Yellow - letters elsewhere in the correct word
  • Green - letters in place

After six attempts, and we win or lose, we must wait for a new day and a new word. Wordle is not the kind of game that you will spend the whole evening playing. This is one of those games that does not take more than 10 minutes a day, but contributes to the regularity of the game - at the end of each game, we see the statistics of our wins and losses and information on which we most often guess the word. .

Wordle - strategies, tips, where to start?

Why has Wordle become so popular? Josh Wardle has managed to create a little puzzle game that's perfect for filling time - and that's by no means a pejorative term. Wordle performs the same function as solving crossword puzzles or Sudoku - it allows us to activate the gray cells, but the game itself lasts only a few minutes. It's perfect to play while driving the bus, during a short break at work or before bed. In addition, the rules are as intuitive and understandable as possible for everyone - both people associated with video games and those who have never been interested in this type of entertainment. If you've ever played Scrabble and wondered what accessible letters can be made from, then you already know what Wordle is.

The second most important element to a game's success is its community. "Wordle", despite its almost ascetic graphics, is heavily focused on interaction between users. After winning the game, we can share our result on social networks - we will only see the colors of the squares, no letters, so we won't spoil anyone's fun. This has had a particularly strong impact on the popularity of Wordle - people massively publish their results on Twitter or Facebook, comment and promote the game itself.

In addition, the first strategies and tips have already appeared among the fans on how to make the game easier for themselves and set up the whole game so that they find the given word as early as possible. The most common way to win easier is to start with a word that has as many vowels as possible, such as ADIEU or AUDIO. It is also recommended to run the first two trials, testing words that contain all possible vowels and as many of the most popular vowels in English as possible, such as R, S, and T.

Wordle's strategies and tips can be helpful, but don't just focus on them - sometimes a good shot or the use of a really unusual word can help more than another use of the word OLD or AUDIO. And the most important thing is to enjoy the entertainment, and not look for an algorithm to win.

Literally fun - Wordle in Polish!

The virtual success of "Wordle" has, of course, led to the emergence of many similar free online games, thanks to which we can make the gray cells even stronger. One of the most popular in our country is "Literally" - the Polish analogue of "Wordle". The rules of the game are exactly the same, but we have to guess five-letter Polish words. Contrary to appearances, the game may seem a bit more difficult, because in Polish, next to the letters known from the English alphabet, there are also diacritical letters such as Ć, Ą and ź.

Other Wordle spin-offs have even moved away from the very idea of wordplay, leaving only very general gameplay frameworks. "Bagldle" is a game in which we get the shape of a country and have to guess its name - we have six tries. Precise minds will surely like "Nerdle" - where instead of letters we guess the given mathematical operation, supplementing it with subsequent numbers and symbols. And this is just the tip of the iceberg: on the Internet, for example, there are versions of Wordle where we solve five games at once, or even the fan-favorite Lord of the Rings, in which we guess words related to The Lord of the Rings. Something for everyone.
