Yamaha X-MAX 125 - made to order
Fussy shoppers, diverse tastes and ever-changing fashion mean that tailoring has never been the easiest profession. It is not an easy task to sew clothes to order, which will not only be unique, but also allow the buyer to feel comfortable in it. Why am I mentioning this, and what does one of the most famous two-wheeler manufacturers have to do with the tailoring profession? Let me explain.
Let me start with a little introduction. Scooters are ideal for crowded cities. However, the world is moving forward, and everything that was once supposed to be as small as possible (smartphones, cars, etc.) grows in the blink of an eye. The same is true for urban two-wheelers. Scooter manufacturers, not wanting to be left behind, have begun to bring so-called maxi scooters to the market, introduced by the Yamaha X-MAX 125. The only question is, will it, despite its large size, be able to live up to the original assumption?
The first impression is very good. Yamaha silhouette draws attention from afar. The scooter owes its dignified but dynamic appearance mainly to the aggressively designed headlights, which, it is worth noting, are completely made using LED technology. The back of the scooter is also not boring. The large sofa can easily accommodate two adults, while the aluminum inserts and tasteful stitching show that we are not dealing with a car from a hypermarket.
However, appearance is not everything. Let's not forget that while Yamaha has included the X-MAX in its sport scooter group, it's primarily an urban vehicle and practicality is the most important thing. This model offers a large sofa compartment that can easily accommodate two helmets and a few small items, two compartments in front of the driver, one of which is lockable, and plenty of legroom. In addition, there is a windshield that effectively protects against wind.
Supporters of gadgets will also have nothing to complain about. The Smart Key is an unusual solution for motorcycles, and it must be admitted that in this case it works very well. The very approach to the scooter prompts him to action, and this allows you to use the machine even faster and more intuitively. In addition, a rich set of indicators is a combination of the classic speedometer and tachometer with a large LCD display that shows a lot of useful information (including fuel consumption, mileage, travel time and average speed).
Luckily, X-MAX can prove that it's not just a poseur, well-equipped with the latest toys, who brags about his position. The comfort of movement, as well as the feeling of safety of passengers, is provided not only by the ABS system, which is rather standard for 125 cm3 scooters, but also by the TCS system, i.e. anti-slip system.
It's time to move on to the key point, answering the most important question that I asked myself at the beginning. In today's world, where every minute counts, the mere fact of moving from place to place is not enough. When I took the test Yamaha, the whole city was practically in traffic jams. I was a little scared how I would maneuver between cars on this heavy (175 kg) and large scooter ...
Now I will summarize in a nutshell. No problem. 17 hp engine at first it does not inspire optimism, but in practice its dynamics allows you to really accelerate efficiently and move smoothly around the city. In addition, the weight distribution, which forces the driver to "merge" with the machine, makes harder maneuvers easier. I was very surprised.
At the weekend I decided to go out of town on a longer trip, for two. And here's another surprise. The scooter with two people easily reaches speeds above 100 km / h, and the large sofa makes the journey - both driver and passenger - at a high level.
Fuel consumption for the entire test was 2,9 l / 100 km, so in this respect I can not blame him.
There is really only one drawback - the price. Unfortunately, the 2018 model costs PLN 19 in the catalog. That's a lot of money in my opinion, assuming the scooter is just an alternative to the car on busier days and certain months of the year.
However, this does not change the fact that Yamaha X-MAX is a great deal for a large scooter that is small enough to easily get around the city and big enough to comfortably ride it on a long trip.
