Yamaha YDX-MORO: The Best Electric Mountain Bike?

Long confined to a role of supplier for bicycle manufacturers, Yamaha embarked on the design of electric bicycles with the YDX-MORO, an “all mountain” electric mountain bike with high-end positioning.

Motors, batteries, controllers ... after having long limited its action to the supply of parts for bicycle manufacturers, Yamaha has taken it to the next level and presented its first electric bicycle. To mark the spirits, the Japanese brand has chosen to embark on the major market trend, the electric mountain bike, with an “all mountain” model with a high-end positioning.

PW-X2 motor and 500 Wh battery

On the electrical part, we obviously find the components of the Japanese firm. Delivering 250 watts of power and 80 Nm of torque, the PW-X2 motor offers five levels of assistance and has been specially designed for the MTB segment. It is coupled with a new device capable of automatically modulating the level of assistance thanks to a set of sensors analyzing the pedaling cadence and the ergonomics of the terrain. On the battery side, the Yamaha YDX-Moro uses a 500 Wh pack elegantly integrated into the inner tube.

Two versions offered

Mounted on 27.5-inch wheels and fitted with Maxxis tires, the Yamaha electric mountain bike receives a RockShox Revelation RC fork, a Deluxe Select + rear shock and a Shimano SLX 11-speed derailleur. More sophisticated, the “YDX-MORO Pro” version has a RockShox Yari RC fork, a Super Deluxe Select + rear shock and an XT gear lever. In both cases, the electrical configuration is identical.

Positioned in the high-end segment, the two models are obviously not cheap. In the United States, count a price of $ 4499 for the Yamaha YDX-Moro and $ 5499 for the "Pro" version.
