South Korea is the world leader in the production of lithium-ion cells as a country. Panasonic as a company

In February 2020, SNE Research estimated that three South Korean lithium-ion cell manufacturers served 42% of the lithium cell market. However, the world leader is the Japanese company Panasonic, which accounts for over 34% of the market. The monthly demand was almost 5,8 GWh of cells.

LG Chem is on the heels of Panasonic

Panasonic held 34,1% of the market in February, which meant it supplied 1,96 GWh of lithium-ion cells, almost exclusively for Tesla vehicles. In second place is the South Korean company LG Chem (29,6 percent, 1,7 GWh), followed by the Chinese CATL (9,4 percent, 544 MWh).

Fourth - Samsung SDI (6,5 percent), fifth - SK Innovation (5,9 percent). Together LG Chem, Samsung SDI and SK Innovation capture 42% of the market.

This may change in the coming months as CATL in China declined due to the outbreak of the virus in China. At the same time, the growth of other manufacturers amounted to several tens of percent on an annualized basis.

If the February processing capacity is extended for the whole year, all producers will produce a total of about 70 GWh of cells. However, everyone picks up the pace as much as possible. LG Chem claims that 70 GWh of lithium cells will be produced annually at the Kobierzyca plant alone!
