Laws and Benefits for Veterans and Military Drivers in Wisconsin

The state of Wisconsin understands how difficult it is for military personnel to keep track of license updates and other requirements for regular drivers, and the state has taken steps to make this easier. They also introduced a number of benefits for both active military personnel and veterans.

Exemption from licensing and registration taxes and fees

While the state does not offer tax or fee exemptions for active duty or veterans, they help you save money and time in a number of ways. First, you may request a refund of the unused portion of your application fee after you have received an out-of-state transfer order. Please note that the vehicle cannot be driven after this until the registration is renewed. Temporary license plates are also available for military personnel on leave who need to drive their vehicles for a short period of time while on staff, but are technically still in active service. These plates last a maximum of 30 days.

Veteran driver's license badge

The State of Wisconsin offers veterans the opportunity to mark their service on the driver's license with a special Veteran Badge. The process requires several steps, but they are relatively simple. First, you need to verify your eligibility, which can be done through the state Department of Veterans Affairs. You can also get information about your rights directly from a support worker in your county. Once you have this information, you can apply for your license designation. If you are renewing your license, this can be done online.

However, if you need a new license or need to replace a lost license, you will need to visit the DMV in person. Be sure to take all of your information with you to get the designation on your new license.

Military badges

Both military personnel and veterans can apply for special military badges for their equipment. The state offers a number of different options (more than 50). They can also be ordered for the main vehicle as well as motorhomes, motorcycles and other vehicles.

All military plates are initially $15 unless personalized. Then you will pay $15 per year. Note that this does not apply to disabled veterans license plates, which the state treats as a different category. Personalized military license plates will cost an additional $15 initially and another $15 per year ($30 introductory and $30 per year).

A complete list of available military honors can be found on the DMV website.

Waiver of military skills exam

The State of Wisconsin is allowing military personnel to transfer their equipment operating skills to the civilian world in the form of a simplified process for obtaining a CDL. Some military licensed personnel may not need to take a skills test, although all will need to take a knowledge test. You will need to complete the Military Service CDL test waiver online application and also apply for the CDL with a standard application. Please note that you will need to provide proof of your military experience as well as your previous military experience with DD_214 or NGB 22.

Driver's License Renewal During Deployment

Wisconsin really goes out of its way to make the driver's license renewal process an easy task for active duty military personnel. In fact, the state will effectively renew your license indefinitely while you are out of state on active duty. To make sure this happens, all you have to do is send a notification to the DMV. Be sure to include the following information:

  • Your name
  • your birthday
  • Your state address
  • Your temporary mailing address during deployment
  • Include a full statement that you are currently on active duty

Submit this information to the following address:

Wisconsin Department of Transportation

Driver Compliance Group

4802 Ave. Sheboygan

Madison 53707

Please note that you do not need to allow the state to renew your license. You can still renew your subscription by mail if you wish. Please note that the state requires a significant amount of information if you choose to renew your mail-in subscription. The processing address is the same as above and you can find out more about the requirements on the state DOT website.

Driver's license and vehicle registration of non-resident military personnel

Like most other states, Wisconsin does not require drivers to obtain a state-issued driver's license if they are on active duty and are only in the state (non-residents). You also don't have to register your car in the state. Please note that you must have a valid driver's license in your home state and your vehicle must be registered (and valid) there.
