Laws and permits for disabled drivers in Alabama

Each state is unique in its requirements for disabled drivers. Below are some of the requirements you must have in Alabama in order to get a license plate or plate with a disability.

Requirements for being disabled

You can apply for a disabled driver's license if you have limited mobility due to the loss of the use of one or more lower limbs, the loss of movement in both arms, or if you have been diagnosed with a condition that limits mobility. If you must carry an oxygen tank with you at all times, you may also be eligible for a disabled driver's license and/or license plate.

Obtaining the proper license plate or plate

You must apply for a plate or license in person at your local Alabama DMV.

To obtain a plate or license plate, you must complete the Disabled Parking License Application form, which can be found on the Alabama DMV website.

In addition, you will need to provide proof of his or her condition from a licensed physician.

The cost of license plates and plates

Car licenses are $23 a piece, motorcycles are $15 a piece, and the posters are free.

Plates are issued only after the Alabama DMV reviews and approves your application, confirming that you meet the standards required for disability status.

How long are permanent plates and license plates valid in Alabama

Permanent plates and license plates are valid for five years. After this time, you can renew your license or plate by completing the same form you filled out when you originally applied for disability status.

Until the age of five, disabled drivers will receive a new plate in the mail every year.

How to renew a permit

Disabled drivers will need to renew after five years. To renew, you will need to fill out the document that you filled out when you first applied and pay the required fee. Also note that the time you can extend depends on the first letter of your last name. Be sure to check the schedule so you know which month you can renew your subscription for.

Types of license plates and plates for the disabled

Permanent plates are colored blue and are valid for up to five years.

Temporary plates are colored red and are valid for a maximum of six months.

Drivers with a permanent disability receive one license plate and one plate for each vehicle you own.

If the driver has a permanent disability but does not receive a license plate, he or she may be in possession of two plates to be placed either on the dashboard or on the rearview mirror.

Drivers with temporary disabilities receive one plate.

How to show your disability permit

Permits must be posted in a conspicuous place for law enforcement officials. This includes hanging a poster from your rearview mirror or placing it on your dashboard.

Disabled Driver Status for Veterans

Veterans must provide three documents:

  • Completed Application for Handicapped Parking License (MVR Form 32-6-230).

  • Applicant's certificate of disability.

  • Military or veteran ID of the applicant.

Alabama Disabled Parking Permit Replacement

You must complete a new section of the original form (MVR Form 32-6-230).

You must then personally submit this form to your local Alabama DMV.
