Laws and Permits for Disabled Drivers in Michigan

It is important that you familiarize yourself with your state's laws and permits regarding disabled drivers, even if you are not a disabled person yourself. Each state has its own unique requirements, and Michigan is no exception.

How do I know if I am eligible for a disabled driver's plate and/or license plate?

Michigan, like most states, has a list of criteria for determining if you qualify for disabled driver parking. If you are suffering from

  • Lung disease that restricts your breathing
  • A neurological, arthritic, or orthopedic condition that limits your mobility.
  • legal blindness
  • Any condition that requires you to carry portable oxygen
  • Heart disease classified by the American Heart Association as Class III or IV.
  • A condition requiring the use of a wheelchair, cane, crutch, or other assistive device.
  • A condition in which you cannot walk 200 feet without stopping to rest or needing help.

I suffer from one or more of these conditions. Now, how can I apply for a disabled driver's plate and/or license plate?

The next step is to complete the Application for a Disabled Parking Sign (Form BFS-108) or Application for a Disabled License Plate (Form MV-110). Many states only require one form, whether you're requesting a license plate or a plate. Michigan, however, requires you to specify in advance.

Your next step is to see a doctor

On the MV-110 form or the BFS-108 form, you will see a section that your doctor will complete for you. Make sure you see a licensed doctor and that he or she completes this section to make sure you do have one or more disorders that restrict your breathing and/or mobility. A licensed physician may include:

Physician or Physician's Assistant Ophthalmologist or Optometrist Senior Nurse Bonus Practitioner Osteopath

After your doctor completes the required section of the form, you can mail the form in person to your local Michigan SOS office or by mail to the address on the form.

How much will I have to pay for the plate and/or license plate?

Posters come in two types, permanent and temporary, and both are free. License plates only require payment of standard vehicle registration fees.

Please note that if you drive a Michigan-registered van, you may be eligible for a 50 percent discount on registration fees. If this applies to you, contact Michigan Emergency Services at (888) 767-6424.

Where can and can't I park with a sign and/or license plate?

In Michigan, as in all states, if you have a sign when your car is parked, you are allowed to park anywhere you see the international access symbol. You may not park in areas marked "no parking at all times" or in bus or loading areas.

Please note that the state of Michigan has a unique perk in that they provide, if you can prove you are eligible, a parking fee exemption sticker. If you are eligible for this program, you will not have to pay parking meter charges. To qualify for a toll waiver sticker, you must have a valid driver's license and prove that you lack fine motor skills, cannot walk more than 20 feet, and cannot reach a parking meter due to a mobility device such as a mobile device . wheelchair.

Keep in mind that each state handles parking fees for disabled drivers differently. Some states allow unlimited parking as long as you show a sign or have a disabled driver's license plate. In other states, disabled drivers are offered extended meter time. Be sure to check out the special parking meter rules for disabled drivers when you visit or travel through another state.

How do I update my plate and/or license plate?

To renew in Michigan, you should contact the Michigan SOS office at (888) 767-6424. The renewal is free and you do not need to visit your doctor again for him or her to confirm that you are still suffering from your condition. Many states require you to see your doctor each time you renew your plate, but Michigan does not.

Disability license plates expire on your birthday, the same time your vehicle registration expires. You will renew your disabled license plate when you renew your vehicle registration.

Can I lend my poster to someone, even if that person has an obvious disability?

No. You can never give your poster to anyone. This is considered an abuse of your disabled parking privileges and you could be fined several hundred dollars. The only time you can use the plate is if you are the driver of the vehicle or a passenger in the vehicle.
