Laws and Permits for Disabled Drivers in Nevada

If you live in Nevada and have a disability, you may be able to apply for a special permit to use disabled parking spaces. You can apply for a temporary, moderate, or permanent plate, a permanent number, or a disabled veteran's number.

Types of plates and plates

A disabled sign hangs on the front of the rearview mirror. It must always be visible. A handicap badge is used in place of the regular license plate.

If you are traveling within the state of Nevada, disabled license plates and permits from other states will also be accepted.

Parking rules

In Nevada, you have the right to use a disabled parking space if you are a driver or a passenger.

Eligibility for a disabled parking permit

In Nevada, the DMV issues special plates and plates for people with disabilities that are recognized by a physician. This means that you will need to provide a medical certificate stating that you are disabled. You can apply for a permit"

  • By mail
  • Personally
  • By fax

You will need to provide disabled license plates and/or plates (Form SP27) to be eligible for a disabled permit. Once you have qualified, you may be issued a permanent, temporary, or moderate plate.

You will need to provide the Nevada State DMV with your existing license plates, and if you are also registering, you will need to provide an emissions verification certificate and pay the normal renewal fees in the same way as you would if you were renewing a regular license.

Update

Special license plates and plates for the disabled will expire and will need to be renewed. Disabled license plates are valid. Moderate tablets last up to two years, and permanent ones up to ten years.

If you have a moderate or temporary disability plate and it has expired, you will need to reapply for a permit. For permanent disability plates, you will receive a renewal notice in the mail and you will need to complete the form and return it to the Nevada DMV before the expiration date. You do not need a doctor to sign your renewal.

Lost permits or plates

If you lose your permit or plate, or if it is stolen, you will need to reapply for a disability permit. The Nevada DMV does not automatically replace lost, stolen, or damaged licenses or plates.

As a disabled driver in Nevada, you are entitled to certain rights and privileges under the law. You have the right to park at privileged locations and you may receive special plates and license plates that identify you as eligible. Allowing anyone to use your special permissions is an offense under the law, and if you are caught doing so, you may be prosecuted under the law. Your special permits or signs must be visible at all times when you use privileged parking.
