Laws and permits for disabled drivers in Ohio

The State of Ohio issues disabled license plates and disabled parking signs, including disabled parking permits. These permits and plates can be obtained by people who qualify as disabled drivers.

Summary of Disabled Plaques and Plaques in Ohio

In Ohio, a disability sign is marked with a wheelchair symbol. If you are disabled, you can get a sign to put on your rearview mirror if you are temporarily or permanently disabled, or if you are affiliated with an organization that provides transportation for the disabled. You can also get a license plate that replaces a regular license plate and identifies you as a person with a disability if you own or rent a vehicle.

If you are visiting Ohio, the state also recognizes your disability plate. In addition, if you travel to other states, they will also recognize your disability permit or Ohio license plate.

Application

If you are disabled, you can apply for a plaque or plaque in person or by mail. To apply for a badge, you must complete an Application for a Disability Badge (BMV Form 4826) and provide a prescription from your doctor or other health care provider. If you run an organization that transports people with disabilities, you don't need a prescription to do so.

When you apply, you will have to pay $3.50 per poster. Applications and fees must be mailed to:

Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles

Mailbox 16521

Columbus, Ohio 43216

Alternatively, you may apply in person at the Ohio Associate Registrar's office in your area. It is enough to bring the relevant documents. To apply in person, visit your local Office of the Associate Registrar of Ohio.

License plate for the disabled

To get a disabled license plate, you must be disabled and either own or rent your own vehicle. You will be required to present a Medical Provider Certificate of Eligibility for Disabled License Plates. You must also include a medical certificate. Payment will vary.

Permits expire and will need to be renewed. Permanent tablets are valid for the period of time specified by your doctor in the questionnaire. License plates are valid as long as your vehicle is registered. To renew the plate, you must re-apply. The numbers are also updated along with your regular vehicle registration.

Lost or stolen permits or license plates

If you lose your permit or license plate, you can replace it. You will not need to have a new prescription.

As an Ohio resident with a disability, you are entitled to certain rights and privileges. Keep in mind, however, that an application must be made to obtain these rights and privileges. They are not given automatically. The Ohio Department of Transportation will not label you as a person with a disability unless you tell them you have a disability, so you must complete the paperwork to exercise your rights.
